Did the same thing. BB was doing a free pair of 3050's with the tv and I was able to switch them for the 3100's.
Love the glasses.
And yes you need your tv on and in 3D for your glasses to turn on. You'll have to synchronize them first which is just a push of the power button.
You Must go buy Beauty and the Beast 3D for one of your first viewing movies on it.
