The National Collegiate Athletic Association on Tuesday imposed a postseason ban on The Ohio State University's football program, effective next year, citing the school for "failure to monitor, preferential treatment and extra benefit violations."

The penalties in this case, some of which were self-imposed by the university and adopted by the committee, include a one-year postseason ban for the 2012 season, additional scholarship reductions, disassociation of both an involved booster and a former student-athlete, forfeiture of almost $340,000 and a vacation of records.

Oh wow, so Ohio St. could have just penalized themselves by skipping their crappy Gator Bowl and instead now have to miss playing in what is near certain to be a far bigger bowl game in 2012? They really should have volunteered to skip this year's game many months ago.

Here's another example of what's wrong with the NCAA. Georgia coach Mark Richt paid numerous staff members out of his own pocket, which is apparently an NCAA violation. The program won't get in any trouble and the discipline is limited to letters of admonishment from the school to Richt and those he made payments to, but this still shouldn't be a violation. The impermissible payments were:

Quote:
• To former recruiting assistant Charlie Cantor, $10,842 over an 11-month period through March 2011.

• To former linebackers coach John Jancek, $10,000 in 2009 after the previous university administration declined to give Jancek a raise when he turned down a coaching opportunity elsewhere.

• To director of player development John Eason, $6,150 in 2010 when his new administrative position called for a salary reduction after he stepped down from an assistant coaching position on Richt's staff.

Richt also paid a total of $15,227 when the school -- citing "difficult economic conditions being experienced by the University" -- refused bowl bonuses to 10 non-coach staff members: director of sports medicine Ron Courson, video coordinator Joe Tereshinski, strength coaches Keith Gray and Clay Walker, football operations manager Josh Brooks, high school liaison Ray Lamb and four administrative assistants.

He also paid a five-year longevity bonus of $15,337.50 due to tight ends coach Dave Johnson when he took a job at West Virginia in 2008 just short of his fifth anniversary coaching at UGA and $6,000 to fired defensive ends coach Jon Fabris in 2010 when Fabris was unable to find a job after his UGA severance package expired.

According to the AJC report, Georgia did not consider any of the payments to violate NCAA rules at the time because they were made with knowledge of the athletics administration.

Such BS. He's not paying players. He's paying his (as he views them) underpaid assistants. Hopefully the school steps up and pays their coaches what they should. I believe Georgia rakes in one of the highest yearly revenue of any football team in the nation. They can afford to pay their coaches. Richt should be congratulated, not imposed penalties on.

The NCAA's not going to penalize one of their big programs very much. Just like Miami and Penn State shouldn't get anything too crippling. It's simply amazing how good of a recruiter Urban Meyer is, before he took over Ohio State's class was around #20. And now they are sitting right around #6.

I read on Rivals that Fickell had secured one player in the ESPN top 146 or 178 and since Meyers been there he's at like 4 in the top 50 and 4-5 in the top 146 or 178

He's a machine.

We'll see. Right now 14 of his 19 recruits are from OH high schools. Recruiting locally within Ohio was enough for sweater vest to dominate the Big-10 but it usually got him pounded by much faster SEC teams. For Meyer's Ohio St. team to actually win national titles they need to recruit speed that can match the SEC and Meyer's own former UF teams.

Hoke seems to be picking off a lot of Ohio recruits at Michigan. Right now 9 recruits in his 2012 class are from Ohio, many 4 or 5 star recruits. Michigan is ranked #3 nationally for 2012 recruiting at the moment.

Thats what I told an OSU fan at work. Its awesome he's locking down Ohio talent, but I thought he'd come in and go right after SEC kids, thats where he could take OSU to the next level.

I loathe OSU so much, it's a perfect fit for them to have Meyer. Funny how some teams and coaches can mirror each others' attitudes.

He's a top-tier college coach. That being said his last few recruiting classes at UF were enormous busts. It's no coincidence he decided to "retire" not long after Tebow graduated. I think his one post-Tebow season the Gators went 8-5 and this season they went 6-6 with pretty much all guys recruited by Meyer. Doubt they would have been better than 7-5 if Meyer had stayed at Florida this year. He really left the program in poor shape talent-wise.

I'm kind of amazed Gene Smith has survived the Ohio State scandal unscathed. I personally think he is just as guilty as Tressel.

How the hell does Maryland rank dead last in the ACC in terms of recruiting? Duke and Wake Forest are ahead of them.

Oh there is no doubt about that, he's incredible. Still dislike him, though.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you like him? I know the way he bailed on Florida and is already at Ohio State is suspect, but he's always come across to me as a good guy. (Unlike Nick Saban)

That's the part of this I don't understand. Plenty of athletic directors have gotten fired for far less than this but somehow Smith has survived despite clear evidence that he knew or should have known about multiple violations.

Because Randy Edsall turned out to be the biggest 1st year coaching bust in football in year.

That's what I think is unfair about the Miami mess. Kirby Hocutt (Miami's former athletic director) suddenly left for Texas Tech a month or two before the story broke. He had clear knowledge of what was going on and some sources allegedly say was involved with the violations directly, but is no longer with Miami and gets off free. That's not fair in my opinion. I'm glad he's gone obviously, but I can't stand that man for what he did.

We've now lost 8 kids, when a redshirt freshman says "I'd rather go play at James Madison and be happy" that tells you something about how he's handled the program (also one of their best commitments who was a top178 player backed out after the second game ).

Also I was never impressed with Edsall's recruiting even at Uconn he was pulling kids from this area and most of them wanted to get away from the state (which he can't sell now), and it was far easier in the big east then ACC. He will always be a joke and I pray to god these continuing rumors of Jacksonville prove true

Could you imagine this dummy at a MAJOR A+ program

Nobody wants to play for a dictator, yeah its cool to play for a Meyer, Saban exc. but they have the resume to not only sell themselves, but why they do it and have the results to back it up. Getting an A$$ kicking by an above average Oklahoma team shouldn't inspire anyone.

Go down to Jacksonville and ruin MaCruz's life, but stay they hell away from my program

phew rant over

Should have hired Leach. Maryland would be probably at least top-5 every year in the ACC in recruiting if they hired him. I'll bet Leach turns around Washington St. fairly quick.

The Pac-12 really picked up some good coaches among it's lower-tier teams going into 2012. Now the conference has Mike Leach, Rich Rodriguez, Kyle Whittingham, Lane Kiffin, Jim Mora, Mike Riley, Steve Sarkisian, David Shaw and Chip Kelly as head coaches. That's a terrific roster of coaches.

One person at Miami who should have been canned a long time ago is Donna Shalala, the school President. She has a long list of controversies. But I suppose with her political connections (former U.S. HHS Secretary) it's easy to keep your job.
