For Christmas I got myself Blue Velvet and 12 Angry Men. My gf got me Midnight in Paris and Le Cercle Rouge. Really wanted Rushmore but it was sold out when I went to BN. Sucks cause I was really looking forward to watching it again.

Are Criterion blus in BD cases?? In the case of sounding redundant, I once read (I could be mistaken) that Criterion's cases were taller, like DVD cases. So, in what type of case do they come??

It's a special case for Criterion blu rays. It's the same height as the ordinary blu ray cases (except it doesn't have the blue blu ray logo empty space on the top so that the paper is bigger) and is the same thickness as a DVD case/European blu ray cases.

Tiny Furniture is a film about a recent college graduate who moves back in with her mother and teenage sister, in New York City's Tribeca neighborhood. She quickly takes up with an old childhood friend, and gets a job at a local restaurant. She has a bit of a love/hate relationship with her younger sister, and often finds herself at odds with her mother as well.

Meanwhile, she gets introduced to a bit of an internet celebrity who happens to be in town shopping around his you tube videos to various networks, in hopes of getting a television contract.

The two immediately begin hanging out, but they do not have a romantic relationship.

She also meets a chef at her job, whom she is attracted to, but he seems almost indifferent acting toward her. Mostly just asking her to score pills for him.

Anyway, that is the setup...

Believe me here when I tell all of you that it sounds a lot more interesting than it actually plays out.

Tiny Furniture isn't a bad film by any means, and I would be easily convinced to watch it again, but it wasn't anywhere close to being as funny as the trailer led me to believe. It's really what I would call a slice of life type of movie. A bit like What's Eating Gilbert Grape, but with less interesting characters, inexperienced actors, and hardly any budget.

The locations look good, the camera work is ok, the acting is passable, dialog not too bad (I was expecting it to be more witty, though) but I have to be honest and say that it kind of felt like watching really well made home videos.

Tiny Furniture rang true, so to speak, with it's dialog and characters. Nothing seemed like it was really forced, or unrealistic in any way. In my mind, though, a movie is a way of telling a story, or transporting the viewer to another time/place. The biggest pitfall in Tiny Furniture is there is stuff going on, and the characters are doing their thing...but none of it is terribly interesting IMO. True to life, yes, but these "adventures" aren't what I would consider ones that present themselves as "movie worthy" if that makes sense. It's just a slice of life, but not a particularly exciting slice. Perhaps I was just expecting something different...I don't know...

It is engaging enough that I never felt bored, and all of the characters feel like they could easily be someone you know, but their lives aren't any more of a movie than mine would be. I do get the feeling that this one could really grow on you with repeated viewings though, maybe even becoming a favorite, due to the "familiarity" quality it possesses. It's like hanging out with modern 20 somethings.

I know it seems as if I am ripping this film apart, but that is not my intention. I am just trying to accurately portray to the reader, what they have in store for them, should they decide to watch this film. If I had to give Tiny Furniture a rating, I would give it a 2.25/4. I do want to add here that I will definitely be on the lookout for future offerings from it's director Lena Dunham. Based on the strength of this debut outing, she seems as if she could develop into a great writer/director with a real flair for realistic dialogue and genuine reactions, she just needs to give her characters something more exciting to do.

I really wish we had Netflix in the UK not the one that is coming in 2012 but the proper US version with Criterion titles on it, we have to make do with lovefilm, and most of the films Criterion release are not on there, to be honest I blind buy nearly all of my Criterions and I would say I enjoy about 90 per cent of them, if I we had Netflix then I know I would save some money: and would enjoy 100 per cent of my Criterion purchases D

Definitely get M. One of the best movies I've seen!! You won't regret it And if you haven't, check out Metropolis also (my second favorite "classic" after Gone With The Wind)!!

They're basically a PS3 game case.... at least that's the closest comparison.

They either use the transparent Scanovo ones, or do "individual" packaging (or on an individual basis that is) like Digipack for Breathless, box-sets like BBS, etc.

The "exception" to every rule in this case, is Benny Buttons, as it's a standard Blue, Blu-ray case, with a slipcover (toss-fare) because it was heavily influenced by the hand of Paramount.

I used the 25% off coupon to pick up Tokyo Drifter on saturday. (Paid $17.99 + tax)

The film is entertaining and beautiful to look at, but I prefer Branded to Kill after my initial viewings of each. I really am enthralled with B&W 60's Yakuza films shot in cinemascope. Pale Flower and Branded to Kill are two new favorites of mine. Now I am really tempted to buy the Nikkatsu Noir eclipse set during the next big sale.

The PS3 still has the empty "blu ray" logo space on top:



The PS3 case is basically just like the ordinary blu ray cases except they're not blue but transparent. The Criterion case basically is a shorter DVD case, that is the same height as an ordinary blu ray case except it uses the whole space on the cover:



There are also custom designed Criterion releases like the Seven Samurai.

My sister got me 12 Angry Men for Christmas.

I bought myself Rushmore, Battle of Algiers, Fear and Loathing, and Identification of a Woman from BN for Christmas, which brings my Criterion total to 176 (dvds included).

I always feel bad when people buy me movies as gifts, because I know they will simply go to Target/BB/BN and pay a lot more than I could have gotten it for from amazon or BN with sales and coupons.

This is becoming funny, first The Phantom Carriage was "under review" and now The Lady Vanishes is also "under review" and not sold atm by Amazon.

Luckily I allready grabbed both and I think and hope The Lady Vanishes is as non problematic as is The Phantom Carriage witch I allready tested to be flawless.

What is supposed to be wrong with them? I haven't read/seen anything.
