In case anyone was wondering, this is why Florida is #2 ahead of Oregon. No big conspiracy, they just played a tougher schedule.
Not that I'd be worried if I'm Oregon anyway. Florida isn't going to beat South Carolina, Georgia and FSU - all of whom they still have to play. Strength of schedule: Florida - 8th of 124 teams Oregon - 78th of 124 teams |

It's not rigged. It's just a lousy system. And a four team playoff isn't going to add all that much credibility or end the controversy.

I'm not saying it's rigged either. I'm just saying it's biased towards the SEC, but not intentionally. The polls it uses are a large part of the problem, as they help determine and quantify the "supremacy".

Looking at the numbers right now from the "other" polls, I just don't get it.
Mississippi State has an average ranking of 12th. High as 7th, low as 21st. Meanwhile Florida State is unranked in all but one of them, where they are 23rd. Clemson is also unranked in all but one, where they are 22nd. I know they each have a loss, but I don't think you can logically say they are not top 25 teams. |

Seems like we're at the point that even if a Big East team could run the table they'd still almost certainly lose out a spot in the national title game to a 1-loss team from a better conference. That could happen with either Rutgers or Louisville.

This really doesn't explain last year. The SEC's SOS was (relatively) awful, and yet they were given the national championship in November.

I doubt that very much. Particularly if an undefeated Oregon is still out there. Add to that the fact that such a loss would be during the last week of the season—the day before the votes are cast, with no chance to go out and rack up more big wins like Alabama did last year. Given that scenario, it's hard to imagine the human polls putting them back together again in Miami Gardens.
But that may be academic. Florida still has to play South Carolina, Georgia and FSU. I don't think they win all those games and put themselves in that scenario in the first place. |

So far in 2012 the SEC is easily back on top in SOS. The Big-Ten is is so bad this season they're trailing the Conference USA in SOS. |

Since you didn't mention which definition of SOS you are using, I can't respond further than that. I will say ones based on "perceived strength of opponent" is yet another one that's wholly biased towards the SEC, because they get 5 teams in the top 10 to start the year. |

This made me curious, so I looked it up. Jeff Sagarin's strength of schedule rankings for 2011 can be found here:
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc11.htm Pasting only the top 12 (which are all the FBS conferences) and showing the central mean: 1. BIG 12 - 83.61 2. SOUTHEASTERN - 80.88 3. BIG TEN - 75.55 4. PAC-12 - 74.72 5. BIG EAST - 72.41 6. I-A INDEPENDENTS - 71.92 7. ATLANTIC COAST - 71.23 8. CONFERENCE USA - 66.04 9. MOUNTAIN WEST - 65.86 10. WESTERN ATHLETIC - 63.73 11. MID-AMERICAN - 63.53 12. SUN BELT - 58.85 The Big 12 and SEC are pretty close at the top, with a wide margin separating them from the conferences at 3 through 7, then another dropoff before getting to the non AQ conferences. So perhaps the word "awful" may be more appropriately used to describe the schedule strengths of that last group. Edit: I should add that Sagarin's rankings factor into the BCS equation. Most of you probably know that, but I didn't want to assume that everyone here did. Last edited by ApolloOne; 10-16-2012 at 02:36 PM. |

One of those had Alabama as the 2nd toughest SOS overall last year(before factoring in the 2nd LSU game). That's absurd. Alabama didn't play Georgia or South Carolina. Their SEC schedule was about as soft as it can be in the SEC, and their non-conference schedule was just as soft. I will give them credit for attempting Penn State though, they didn't know that team would be nothing special when they scheduled it. |
