Blow Out Blu-ray REVIEW

A couple of notes:

1.If you cannot play Region-A discs, this release is a good alternative. Aside from the fact that its transfer was struck from a dated source (most likely an older master provided by MGM), it is just fine. There are no traces of lab tinkering (to make the film look modern). So, whatever denoising corrections you see, they were more than likely introduced when the master was prepared. This isn't surprising. What you have here is an older but still raw transfer.

2. The Criterion release uses a new transfer from a brand new scan which was approved by director Brian De Palma. It is also framed at 2.40:1 as opposed to the 2.35:1 on the Carlotta disc. Nothing to worry about there, even if you have a projector. Depth and color reproduction are the two areas that benefit the most. Criterion's release is clearly superior.

3. The audio is also fine, though I lean towards the lossless track on the Criterion release.

4. The big bonus here are the extras. Completely different again (done by Fiction Factory). From what I can tell, the video interviews were done at the same time the ones for the Dressed to Kill release were recorded (one long interview with each participant, cut for each film).

5. This release also comes in a black case.

All in all, I'd say that together with the Criterion release, you have the definitive presentation of Blow Out - two discs, great new transfer from Criterion, plus a decent one from Carlotta, and a ton of outstanding supplemental features.

Have a great weekend.
