Yeah, I've been lurking in there. Apparently if you have a minor IMDB page you are entitled to be a petulant know-it-all. Looking forward to the cleaned-up thread.

I have been reading the last few posts in this thread and if it were any more boring Malick would make a film out of them. - stvn1974

I gotta admit, that was pretty freaking funny

I'd take it. Though you can drop Le Amiche and throw in Il Grido...not because of film quality, but because MoC has a great-looking blu out already. Yeah, yeah, Region B rah-rah...

I have lucid dreams based on how great his 'trilogy', esp L'Avventura's island sequence, would look in hi-def. Though L'Eclisse, which I find to be the fullest expression of Antonioni's formal technique, is first on his list from me.

Ugh, I had to push the exit button. Any sort of intelligent discussion was eschewed in favor of petty rants. Yeah, it's obvious that Terrence Malick isn't a linear storyteller, tell me something new. I can't wait for them to complain about the same thing in the Criterion thread when their ignorant butts finally see a Godard, Bunuel or Brakhage film.

Ps: I just saw Amer. Wow! Breathtaking!
(Likely response of Tree of Life thread bashers) I think there's quite a bit of metaphor....wait, (scratches head) "it's bad story telling....nothing happens....I could string up some home videos and it'll be just as good...where's my Avengers blu ray (fumbling around...ah, that's better."

Could you imagine a huge BBS type Antonioni set? I would cry for a week...then get a CC Tattoo.

It's one of my very favorite films (it ranks as my 8th favorite film I think---yes, I'm obsessed with listing favorites of everything )---in fact, it's the film I always reference as the kind of film I wish I had made, because visually, it's just everything I love.

Somebody was talking about it here? I must have missed that discussion..

That would be excellent... I expect a trilogy set is more likely, but the more films included the better.

It's the definition of a fever dream. I was scribbling away whom I thought inspired Cattet and Forzani (Brakhage, Bunuel, Kubrick, Tony Scott, David Lynch, Godard, Dali, Freud...) but they totally forge new ground and make it 100% theirs. Any Formalist will have a field day trying to decode all of the symbolism and film technique.

side note: finally sat down and watched turin horse the other night (an xmas gift from pop), and can't say that i enjoyed quite as much as tarr's earlier output. slow, repetitive sequences (i would describe the film as 'meditative'), but beautiful camera work and patented choreographed long-takes. watching this along with haneke's amour in the same week has made me dread getting old, but has forced me to address my own mortality.
That old AE DVD is looking pretty poor by today's standards. Non-anamorphic and everything.

I felt the same way about The Turin Horse. I felt, oddly, perhaps that it wasn't quite long enough to breath in the same way as his other films. WH is by far my favourite.

Now that Bela Tarr has given up filmmaking, I wish Criterion would release a box set, with all his films with Satantango as the centrepiece.

I know we just got The Kid with a Bike, but I would love to see Criterion eventually just release the rest of the Dardenne brothers' catalog, most especially Le fils.

One of my top 10 films of the Aughts. There are few modern films that I want to get blu treatment more than this.

I just finished watching Sweet Smell Of Success and I found it very enjoyable. Susan Harrison is a very beautiful actress, but the acting by both Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster won me over. The film does a great job at showing the influence of the media, or anyone in power, for that purpose. It just goes to show how desperate some people are for a piece of power and the lengths that they will go to in order to get some notoriety.

A lot of websites call it a "film-noir", but after watching it, I don't think it's very film-noiry at all. Sure there are some moments, such as the cinematography and the sort of abrupt ending, but other than that, it's more of a drama film.

I really prefer these old films to most of the newer ones nowadays. While 2012 was a very promising year in film (one of the most promising in the past decade or so), nothing compares to these old classics. I guess I can bring up the whole argument about "sex sells". Sure sex in movies is fine, I guess, but most of the films nowadays rely on it too frequently. These older films are perfect and have sold quite well for hardly any.

I would love City Lights on Blu-ray. I've heard so many great things about this Chaplin film, in particular. He was very influential in the film world and I have a lot of respect for him, as a result.

But the movie is in desperate need of a US Blu-ray.

I must have a very narrow definition of film noir because I keep seeing movies listed as noir that I don't consider noir.
I don't recall any Lionsgate releases either (that I've seen thus far). I do know that The Double Life Of Veronique is a Miramax film, but as far as Lionsgate goes, I'm not so sure. I also agree with you on the noir element.

This is a pretty cool article about how the artwork developed.

I'm not a big artwork on the wall kind of guy but I'd grap a print of my avatar in a second if Criterion ever offered it.
Thanks for the link. I'm looking forward to reading it. That scene was one of the best filmed scenes in the entire movie, for me. The color aspect makes it even cooler, in my opinion. I'm not a big artwork guy either, but I would gladly buy that. I'm still in the process of getting some posters and other forms of art that I would like to put in my room. Hopefully someday, I'll have a nice house with a theater room and I would gladly display all the great pieces of art from cinema history.

I know what you mean. Specifically, you just have to soak up the imagery then worry about dialogue. Easy watches

Nut sure if I would call it Noir however.

I did have the blasphemous thought that this is one modern remake I would like to see. Ryan Gosling in the lead role...It definitely applies today with this bloated image of celebrity we have and all the slimy news gossip going on.

*leaves thread before getting shot*
Ryan Gosling is one of the best modern actors, in my opinion. While I personally wouldn't want to see a remake of this film, as it is a gem, I can definitely see him playing a key role.

It's a moral imperative to have Elevator to the Gallows on Blu-ray at some point, so that the Miles Davis improvisational score can be heard in high definition.
I would love Le Samourai to be announced sooner than later. It was actually on my DVD Criterion Wish List a few months back, but I realized that a majority of the DVDs are fair game for an upgrade.

Somebody's a bit Antonioni happy

I have Identification Of A Woman, but I haven't seen it yet. I wouldn't mind seeing Blow Up, as it was either the inspiration or the original version of De Palma's Blow Out, which I enjoyed.

I just got browse reading it. A lot of those people don't know a good movie if it hit them right in the face. Most of those people like cheesy Blockbusters judging by some of their collections.

Hey, too each his own, but they should really do a little research into certain films that don't sit right with them before making a typical comment as "it sucks", because they didn't get it.

That's why I like this small-knit Criterion family. All of you guys are film lovers and truly appreciate the art of filmmaking. Most of you will watch anything, but you all have some of the best taste that I've seen, and as a result you've all impacted me in one way or the other. As a result, I thank you all for that. I feel a lot more movie savvy and a lot more analysis-savvy because of you folks.

The interview from this site lists some inspirations:

https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=7487

I myself am hugely inspired by the film...I regularly watch it every couple months.

iScottie, if you're interested in more gritty, noir-inflected films about media, I find that Wilder's Ace in the Hole (a Criterion DVD I'd like to upgrade) and Kazan's A Face in the Crowd make solid companions to Sweet Smell of Success.

I actually bought Ace In The Hole during the last Barnes 'N Noble sale, but I haven't seen it yet. I wouldn't mind watching it sometime this weekend, though.

A Face In The Crowd sounds like it would be good. Any chance Criterion would release a Blu?

I think it's Warner so signs point to no.

It's excellent though and it shows up on TCM pretty regularly. It's well worth a watch or five.
