I Saw the Devil - 4.5/5

Fast paced, great camerawork, phenomenal acting, and a great plot. This has to be one of my favorite serial killer films, right behind Zodiac, but ahead of Se7en.

Did you find this with your copy?
I thought the bulk of the issues were pretty subtle. Grain and noise were present, but never really drowned out the picture or made it unwatchable imo (certainly not as bad as movies like Ong Bak, The Killer, or Ichi the Killer, which stand as the worst-looking BDs I've seen; although I think those ones are all actual film, not digital). It was just, now and then, I'd notice an oddity here and there.

Gentle softness seemed to be the prevailing issue I noticed. Like I said, not blatant DNR or anything; I'm not sure if it was filmed that way, or the image was filtered, or what.

I did notice in the extras that Wiseau was using double-cameras (and he's going on to write a book about it, for all you budding film students ). In spite of that and the info you've given, the Blu-Ray might be the best it will ever get.

Default A Movie A Day: Day 300

The Good: The concept. The themes. The cinematography. The special effects. The musical score. The editing. The magic. Everything about it is sheer perfection. Endlessly watchable.

The Bad: None.

The Bottom Line: A simple, timeless masterpiece, The Red Balloon is the closest thing to a perfect film that I've ever seen.

My import is on it's way. I was excited to read what the story was about, but your review failed me in that regard. I think it has to do with a Red balloon and a little boy, though.

The Good: Nice animation. Moving musical score (turn the volume way up). That ending... Not your typical Disney ending.

The Bad: A tad manipulative (but it did almost move me to tears. Almost).

The Bottom Line: If you liked Grave of the Fireflies, give this short a look.

Moonrise Kingdom - 4/5

I really enjoy Wes Anderson flicks, and this one is no different. It's fun, whimsical, unique, and has a fantastic cast.

Default A Movie A Day: Day 301

Father and Daughter (2001)
dir. Michael Dudok de Wit
The Good: Excellent storytelling. Impressive pencil/charcoal animation. Great musical score and sound effects. Certified heart-wrencher.

The Bad: None.

The Bottom Line: A simple yet powerful tale of loss and longing, de Wit's Academy Award-winning Father and Daughter is surely the most touching 8 minutes you'll ever see.

Yeah, that's all you really need to know. Any further info would be crossing spoiler territory.

Very beautiful story and amazing animation. Have you seen The Monk and the Fish by the same director? Really great short, and quite funny as well.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

Among the most carefully modulated and finely crafted work of the last year stands Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. What would otherwise be a standard procedural thriller is metamorphosed into a thoughtful rumination on the deadening of several public servant's souls and the inescapability of fate and the value of accepting the multifaceted nature of evidence. In one hundred year's what would be made of their grave turmoils? Will the barren land, which they occupy, remember the efforts of several policemen and a doctor?

On a clear night, amongst the numerous hills, a sinewy road is exposed. We are thrust into the action with meticulous detail for the search of a certain burial spot in one of the many empty fields. One stop after another is made as the suspects are reluctant in divulging any useful information. Once a desired end result has been met, to what extent is is zero sum and is is possible for the inevitable cranking of a gears to make more sense than their cyclical nature allows?

Doctor Cemal tags along while Prosecutor Nusret oversees the search. Above all, their relationship and numerous conversations provide the film theme and nuance. Their contrasting views on the deterministic nature of crime will be tested as the inevitable is unearthed.

This is an extraordinary film that will reward the patient. It's the rare film that's not afraid to detail mundane and small processes that comprises an investigation. It's well researched and pulls no punches. In place of a traditional score or overused character development methods, the film accepts the earthy details of the character's lives and the land which envelopes them. In the numerous establishing shots, the soundtrack is composed of natural sounds: the wind's whir, the crickets chirp and when the mis en scene veers into the metaphysical, the crackle of thunder.*

4/4

Annie Hall - 5/5

This is what I believe to be Woody Allen's masterpiece. Woody Allen tends to write his films as almost an extension of himself, and it shines through in Annie Hall . Allen's character, Alvy Singer, is neurotic, intolerant, and obsessive, and you get the feeling that Allen isn't much different in his day to day life. This aids the film in connecting to the audience on a more human level, a level that most everyone can relate to. This isn't the perfect love story, it's not love riddled with cliche barriers, breakthroughs, laughs, sadness, and teary eyed happiness. Annie Hall however is hilarious to the core, while at the same time providing a more accurate representation of relationships than most films care to attempt.

Default A Movie A Day: Day 302

The Man Who Planted Trees (1988)
dir. Frédéric Back
The Good: Top-notch storytelling. Inspiring. Christopher Plummer is the man, and Frédéric Back is an animation god for creating such an unparalleled work of art. Goosebump-inducing musical score. Great sound effects. High replay value, especially if you appreciate gorgeous animations.

The Bad: None.

The Bottom Line: Without a doubt, one of the finest animated films ever made, Frédéric Back's The Man Who Planted Trees is just mind-blowing, jaws-on-the-floor flawlessness. Watch it. Now.

Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Collection

This Blu-ray includes four films. "A Grand Day Out," "A Matter of Loaf and Death," "A Close Shave," and the Oscar-winning "The Wrong Trousers."

5/5 for all of them. Great animation, great characters, great stories and great storytelling.

And a BUNCH of great bonus features too.
