so are we concluding if a movie is shot at 4K (or higher) it's assumed the bluray scan is 4K, under this theory this would include, well ... here:

http://www.red.com/shot-on-red/cinema

(in my opinion, this is opening a can of worms and presumptuous).

I think Sony has been scanning all of their new transfers and restorations at at least 4K for 3-4 years now. Likely Warners, Fox, Paramount as well. It's not necessarily a measure of quality either. Warners and Lowry have been doing scans for nearly a decade and the older masters still leave something to be desired on Blu-ray.

Most movies shot on Red have actually been finished at 2K.
Sony has a list of newer 4K films, though its not 100% accurate and certainly not complete: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/mkt-dig...slisting.shtml

That's what I'm saying. I even noticed the "Shot in 4K" on their site last December.

But I don't think the Blu-ray release for DT or TSN were mastered at 4K for the Blu-ray, simply for theatrical exhibition.

I don't think there's a distinction there. Both the DCP and the HD master are going to be made from the same DI.

I also thought 'Vertigo' and 'The Birds' blu-rays were 4K scans - any truth to this?

um, no - there's no mention of the hidef transfer to home video (i.e, bluray), it's pertaining to theatrical exhibition.

I'm not sure what the difference is supposed to be?
The movie is mastered in 4K. Any version of it (other than some Russian bootleg telecine or something) would be produced from that master.

well one would hope. The article is about the exhibition of the movie to theaters. Everyone assumes that a superior master source would be used for home video application, but there's no guarantee. But yes, since new movies when a 4K workflow is created, a 4K scan does (and should) make sense.

And is it really 4k? I know that and The Social Network were shot in 5K, but I thought they were mastered in 2K for the Blu-ray?
The Social Network used a 35mm Source, I heard
from somewhere that the it was a 4k to Film, then to again 4k Transfer. And the Sony Blu-ray had some very fine 35mm grain in a few dark scenes, which are hard to discern in screenshots but in motion one can see.

May someone answer my question: Will the 4K transfers be noticeably better in picture quality on a 1080P HDTV compared to the earlier Blu-ray releases of these films?

Lincoln and Django Unchained were 2 films this year that actually had a photochemical release. The 4k Scan for Lincoln was only for theatre and home video to replicate the look on the neg with no manipulation. Though Django had a 4k Scan before the photochemical color timing which was then digitally color matched to the timed prints.

Ofcourse, compare the old Gladiator to the new one. Though in that case the old HD Sourced transfer was molested with DNR and EE. For a better comparison compare the opening shots between the UK and US Chariots of Fire, the US was a 4k Scan from the recent photochemical restoration and the UK one was a mere HD Scan. Though both were first rate transfers the US BD had a lot more detail on the opening scenes because of the 4k Scan.

Not true... both used (4K) digital intermediates. Apparently Tarantino wanted a photochemical release but his DP talked him out of it. It's just pointless at this point, barely any first-run theaters run 35mm these days.

I don't know about that, but while the film was shot in 4K, apparently, it was only finished at 2K. The film did go through a pass at Lowry Digital which probably evened out a few shots. Perhaps they added some film-like texture as well? http://reduser.net/forum/showthread....l=1#post657287 & http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthr...-Lowry-Digital

So I suppose it's a good idea to sell my current copies of Apocalypse Now, Alien, Aliens and just wait to get the superior 4K transfers?
