I'm not sure how you can under rate a film that took a beloved series threw in it the trash, set it on fire, pissed on it and then strangled it to death.

Even the makers acknowledge it was a disaster.

The problem with Alien³ started with the pre-production they hired a director (after several other directors walked away) who came up with an interesting abstract idea that was almost pure-science-fiction, something you can get away with when you make a short or independent film but for a blockbuster would never work. What remained was a hodgepodge of ideas and drafts which changed daily. There was almost zero chance of the finished product would be on par with the two previous films no matter who worked on it and saw it to completion.

If Ward had toned down the main idea I think the idea of a medieval world set in the future could have been a fascinating one.

You drama queen. Alien3 is a fine movie you're getting confused with AvP.

The extended cut of Alien 3 is brilliant (IMHO). It might not be in keeping with the character of the first 2 but Alien is an accidental franchise from a time before studios started planning ten sequels from the outset! Hence, the ending of the previous film always has to be undone before its sequel can get on with telling its own story. That's the fault of the producers rather than individual directors.

Vincent Ward's treatment was amazing but it would have suffered the same fate as Fincher's film. People would still have complained that it was too dark with no explosions, a la Aliens. Prometheus confirmed that on one hand people who love the Alien films have very strong ideas about what they do and do not want. On the other hand the producers insist on persevering with a franchise but continue to make films in isolation. It's a recipe for disaster.

My bargain boxset arrived today! Very pleased only cost me £5.98 from amazon! Such a good price for it! Had to wait a while for it as it said usually dispatched within 7-10 days which probably meant it wasnt in stock at the time and the reason why it was so cheap.

My advice is don't bother. It may be made by Sideshow but its poor quality and badly finished and the tiny alien wrapped around a disproportionately large egg looks strange, at least to me. It does light up with a couple of AA batteries in the base. I sold mine last Christmas

Can anybody help me here?

I wanted to buy the anthology that had the coolest cover: , and it said that it was region free on the site however it says it's only Region B on the amazon.co.uk site.

Is it actually region free?

I don't know if the discs are region free or not, but that box set loses the 2 discs of extra features. The other boxset has 6 discs. But you might already know this and aren't bothered about extras
