Not necessarily. I think the two formats have different markets and they also overlap. There are many people on this forum who want physical media but won't buy streaming (myself included) but there are those who like streaming that will still buy a disc or two. What might happen is that 4KBD may become more of a niche product with streaming being the default option, just like how vinyl records of new music releases are today as the vast majority of listeners prefer MP3's.

Apple, Netflix, Amazon, etc. have to try to be internet service providers as well. Cell phone, cable tv, satellite tv, Apple, Netflix, etc. all vying for the biggest piece of the movie streaming service pie. As a result of all this Blu ray will still be very, very, important to Sony, Netflix, Amazon, XBox, Best Buy. Blu ray is one advantage that Apple does not have, it will be interesting to see if Apple will finally adopt Blu ray when the reality of the problems with internet 4K Movie streaming becomes apparent
+1.

The ISPs are going to milk this for every cent. Data caps will keep everything nicely in check for them just as it has done in recent years. Comcast, Cox, Cablevision, etc. will all very slowly raise the prices along with their speeds all the while hoping you won't notice the increase your bill.

Mind you, up here the ISPs are now offering a cheap no limit option, which at first kinda surprised me. So if this spreads, streaming will be streaming, but if they come up with a fair download price structure I believe that hard copies will go the way of the Dodo faster than we think. Do remember that with every change of either formats or delivery, at first people say "no way, who needs 4K". The truth is it will happen, and we'll embrace it, and since most people I know who are in this hobby already have digital setup (PC, Mac, NAS servers) and the "cloud" is happening whatever you want, downloads seem the way of the future, and that future might be sooner than we think.

The data caps are largely irrelevant. They're only there(now) so you don't have bandwidth hogs screwing up available resources for the 99% of customers(who never go anywhere near the limit btw). As demand increases, the caps/bandwidth will simply adjust. If they don't, competitors will simply create a product for those dissatisfied w/ their current provider. It's in the ISP's best interest in the long run to simply charge more for faster speeds/infrastructure improvements. It can be done in a way that's profitable for them as providers. There'll be very few if any bandwidth issues. Bottom line is if consumers need it, SOMEONE will eventually provide it. I doubt the ISP's(many are publicly traded) are just going to stand pat...

There are bandwidth issues now, imagine millions of people streaming 4K movies @ the same time & if your a family sharing the same internet connection forget it. People could & will be priced out of faster bandwidth speeds. Not all locations will have the option of Gigabit internet, satellite internet still has Signal latency issues. There is not that many place's in the U.S. that have Gigabit internet speeds & the city's that do its not through out the whole city yet. here is where were @ for Gigabit internet so far in the U.S. http://highspeedgeek.com/america-gigabit-internet/

I assume the container….http://www.live-production.tv/news/3...telegenic.html

Should be on its way to Brazil and *the World Cup dress rehearsal competition* with the cameras to follow shortly, along with the CA-4000 Studio Back - http://vimeo.com/63615955# not mentioned in the THR article-> http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...heading-451120

P.S.
For those soccer fans out there, Group A comprises Brazil, Italy, Japan (yesterday becoming the first team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup ) and Mexico, while

Group B features Spain, Uruguay, Tahiti and Nigeria.

Yes, it met your listed criteria. Specifically, I’m referring to the “scientific testing” involving even a smaller-sized display (56”), of arguably lesser quality, where observers could differentiate 4K from HD source at 3½ ft. away (not only 2 ft.)…briefly summarized at ~ the 38’ 08” mark of the YouTube clip linked to below. Like I said, assuming excellent compression, your personal observation doesn’t fit with the bell-shaped curve in the testing involving over 50 other ‘blinded’ observers.

If I were compelled to guess as to the reason for this discrepancy (assuming you do have normal visual acuity), then the ‘problem’ is/was the compression of the 4K sample content being exhibited, rather than any inherent deficiency of the 4K 65” Sony display itself.

NAB 2013 Wrap Up at SMPTE DC - YouTube
After you’ve examined the coordinates along the horizontal axis of the graph at ~ the 38’ 08” mark of the clip….I come prepared to be more scientifically precise as to the exact meaning of the resolution designations listed, namely -

UHD-1..refers to 3,840 x 2,160 @50fps cropped from a 4096 x 2160 @ 50fps source
1080p…refers to 1080p/50 down-rezed from that UHD-1 source
1080i….refers to 1080i/25 derived by way of a HHI filter and de-interlaced from the 1080p/50 source
720p…..refers to 720p/50 down-rezed from that UHD-1 source

You've seen to forget the new codec that's up to 75% more efficient than MEPG 4 AVC.

Spain versus Tahiti... seriously. That maybe the most lopsided match in the history of international soccer. I think I'll mute the TV and watch with the Benny Hill theme on repeat.

I wonder what the chances of being able to watch this in 4k anywhere in the state of New Mexico are? Are indeed the World Cup itself. Stuck with crappy 720p on ESPN crammed down to about 4000kbps by Dish... yea! Forget 4k I'd pay rather good money to see the 4k feed of the FIFA World Cup downrezed to 1080p at ~20Mbps AVC.

I've found the feed to my XBox ESPN app looks at least as good as the Dish feed.

Says a lot. On TV, Dish, they only offer two ESPN HD chanels. On the XBox, anything shot in HD is available. As for the quality, Dish uses MPEG 4 AVC. Maybe the XBox upconverting 720p to 1080p makes it look a little better.

That would only happen if those millions switched overnight(what I've been saying all along). The demand for 4K movies will gradually increase, and the ISP's will adjust appropriately to the level of demand. If most people started pulling that kind of info down the pipe tomorrow, then yeah, we'd have a problem. It's simply just not gonna happen that way. When has it ever?

Well, I won’t be disappointed as long as during the Tahiti match(es) at least one Tamure dancer appears in the stands and struts her stuff, like so –

And after the Confed Cup, I’m looking forward to another World Cup since it feels like it’s been too damn long since the last twin extravaganza….

Just in case few attractive foreign spectators show up, Brazil certainly has the natural ambience to do the tournament justice all by itself, nenhum problema -

I wish the HEVC codec was %75 percent more efficient, more like 30-45% percent. I'm well aware of HEVC. The HEVC codec takes more CPU power & needs alot more RAM space & really fast RAM speeds. Which brings up more issue's streaming would have to deal with.

You say 4K streaming would be a problem, then to problems not going to happen to there has never been problems with streaming

i wonder if there will be rereleases of most blurays..or if labels like criteron are going to rerelease all there movies in 4k again.
sony will most likely do that to a lot of there movies... feels like a waste of money at the moment to collect movies at all...
