Press Release Predator UHE
“Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition arrives on Blu-ray with a stunning new restored transfer on June 29 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.” “a complete digital restoration of the film” (keyword is digital) Press Release Predator 3D: “Additionally fans will get a first look at the all-new 3D transfer of the film before it arrives on Blu-ray 3D” (keyword is 3D) Note: Posters on this forum and others have stated that the Predator UHE DI was made from a 4K scan. I have never seen an official confirmation of this. If it is true, I think you have to ask yourself, why would Fox spend an extra $200,000 on a second 4K scan? Has scanner technology improved that much in the last 3 years? Fox seems to use the words 'transfer" and "master" or "remaster" interchangeably. Transfer or scan is the conversion of film to digital, while master or remaster is the modification of the digital image using software tools for color correction, noise reduction, etc. Quote (Home Theater Forum) "Is this new 4K transfer actually new or was it the basis for the last Predator release which some people ( including myself ) would not buy." (Foxymulder) Response from Ron Epstein: “The information I received comes directly from James Finn at Fox. However, just for you, Malcolm, I am going to again pose the question again to Mr. Finn tonight when I see him. I'm certain that he's going to reiterate to me that this is a brand-new transfer all around.” “Check back in this thread later this evening.” (This was on 6 Aug. As of 13 Aug. Epstein never posted a confirmation that it was a new 4K transfer (scan) and not the 4K scan used for creating the UHE ) UPDATE 14 Aug. Epstein was unable to confirm a new 4K scan was used for Predator 3D. "No new info other than what I already posted, sorry." 1. Tyler Foster @tylerfdvdtalk 18 Jul @FinnAtFox Is the Predator 3D Blu done off of a new transfer? 2. James Finn @FinnAtFox 18 Jul @tylerfdvdtalk yes. Looks fantastic b (marketing spokesmen are paid to be positive) 3. Tyler Foster @tylerfdvdtalk 18 Jul @FinnAtFox So, not the master used on the UHE? That's good news. Will it also be viewable in 2D ala I, Robot? (ala I, Robot means one disk viewable on 3D and 2D players and displays) 4. James Finn @FinnAtFox 18 Jul @tylerfdvdtalk correct. Both formats. (Finn answered the question about viewable ala I, Robot. He did not respond to the first question) Conclusion, tweeting is useless when trying to gather definitive information) 1. Tyler Foster @tylerfdvdtalk 23 Jul @FinnatFox Last Tweet on this. So, Predator: separate 3D and 2D (and DVD) discs, with a new 2012 or 2013 master? 2. James Finn @FinnAtFox 23 Jul @tylerfdvdtalk right now it is a new transfer on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D. Please don't watch PREDATOR in standard def. (So, did Finn lie about the playability ala I, Robot? ) 3. Tyler Foster @tylerfdvdtalk 23 Jul @FinnAtFox Well, I mention because the set comes with a DVD, doesn't it? And the pertinent question was, one disc or two / date of transfer. 4. James Finn @FinnAtFox 23 Jul @tylerfdvdtalk two and right now likely not a DVD - but maybe. (This just means there are two disks in the release, not that one disk contains 3D and the other 2D. Also note the date of transfer question was not answered.) Conclusion, marketing spokesmen are very good at tap dancing around issues. John Mitchell @Orville89 1h @FinnAtFox Hi, i just read that Predator is getting a new remaster for the 3d blu-ray, any chance for a 4k scan? Greetings from Germany :-) James Finn @FinnAtFox 1h @Orville89 new remaster for Blu-ray 3D that also come with a new master on Blu-ray. Out in December. (More tap dancing and still no answer to the 4K scan question) Speculation will get you everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The prescience of Robert A Harris in his “A Few Words About Predator 2010” “I'm thinking this because Predator looks decidedly like Monsters vs. Aliens 3D, but of course not yet in 3D. That may be coming.” (Home Theater Forum) ![]() Last edited by raygendreau; 08-15-2013 at 05:49 AM. |

Almost certainly no, at least not at first. The whole point is they want you to buy the more expensive version and they do know that a corrected transfer will certainly get lots of people to crack open their wallets. Maybe in a year or so -- I do think they're thinking about it, which is why they're putting them on separate discs.

Here are a few more comments about the 3D Predator clips shown at SDCC:
"I receive a pair of plastic glasses, and I understand. I put them on and look at the TV. They are really quite good; I can make out the intended detail without the requisite headache, an experience which has repeatedly eluded me in the 3D cinema. The film: A mess of jungle scenes with our stars walking around, shooting at things, and having discussions about walking around and shooting at things. Despite, or perhaps because of, the huge variety of depths of all the foliage, this comes off quite well The film: There's a scene with a helicopter flying over the jungle. It is clearly a helicopter-shadow flying over a jungle-shadow. I respect this limitation more than I would respect trying to reshoot or otherwise severely alter the original film; anyway, we quickly cut to the chopper interior, which works out much better. I don't think you'll have many complaints about this film if you're a 3D aficionado," http://www.flickdirect.com/news/4227...c/article.ashx |

I fully understand wanting the new transfer in 2D, but for Fox, that's not the main point of the release. |

It's not worth asking about. The intentional point is to force people otherwise uninterested in 3D to buy the combo pack. And you are mistaken...if the transfer's great, then it will definitely work.

In response to this post: Ronald Epstein, on 05 Aug 2013 Just received confirmation directly from Fox that the 2D version (in addition to the 3D) is indeed a new 4K transfer. This post specifically questions the "new 4K transfer" claim: "Is this new 4K transfer actually new or was it the basis for the last Predator release which some people ( including myself ) would not buy." (Foxymulder) Ronald Epstein, on 06 Aug 2013 "The information I received comes directly from James Finn at Fox. However, just for you, Malcolm, I am going to again pose the question again to Mr. Finn tonight when I see him. I'm certain that he's going to reiterate to me that this is a brand-new transfer all around." Check back in this thread later this evening. Ronald, it's been more than a week. Get any new info?
