Gorgeous opening scene though!

which part of Thief was shot on Lincoln Ave? I don't recall. I remember, obviously, The Green Mill which is on Lawrence and Broadway and the car dealership which was on Western just south (I believe) of Irving Park. ...and then Balmoral Ave comes up.. I couldn't place it as to where the cross street is, but that's in my neck of the woods (pretty sure) on the nw side near O'Hare.

The Barnes & Noble 40% off sale is still in effect, so I've just reserved these for pickup this afternoon...

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Serpico

I've been looking for The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and Serpico since they were released, but the Barnes & Noble "Pick Up in Store" function does not easily work for newer titles for some reason. As per the instructions that someone gave on this forum a few days back, I did the "Pick Up in Store" search for an older movie, and then copied/pasted the product numbers of these newer titles onto the URL to get the search to work. This may be why people are having trouble finding Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project set in local stores when performing a website query.

I've been wanting The Bridge on the River Kwai since I bought my Blu-ray player, but I've always somehow focused on other titles ahead of it. The 40% off will allow me to get the Blu-ray for less than $10, so there's no excuse.

I loved my first viewing of Marketa Lazarová, although my User Review for the movie is a rather laughable attempt to get my mind around the film. The visuals are both feral and beautiful.

I saw so many in 2013 and bought only a few. Those were, in no particular order:

Life of Ohauru
The Big City
Journey to Italy
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
La Notte

For 2014, the only one I plan to buy, so far, is The Great Beauty. But I'll see many more than that.

hey SOJ - how would you describe those films? I am curious about them, but hesitant to put them on a blind buy want list. are they lyrical like Pather Panchali? (saw that one recently) are they plot driven? (guessing not) to be filed under the category of art films? do they feature explorations of Indian culture? what can one expect w/ these films?

curious. thanks!

Was just there at lunch and the sales lady said it's running until Jan 2nd. I was hoping my copy of Pale Flower had come in, but no luck. So, I picked up:

The Third Man
The Complete Metropolis

I can't wait to watch The Third Man on blu-ray. I love Orson Welles and noir, so best of both!

My one question is, should I double dip on the Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis for the Fading Image documentary, or any other reason? The review doesn't really make it seem worth the dip, but thought I'd ask here and see what the general feeling was. Thanks for the feedback!

The next 50% off sale may not happen for a long while at Barnes & Noble, but the store periodically issues great coupons.

I'm not sure when the 40% off sale ends, but I want to say December 24. Don't hold me to that.
(EDIT: I just read the above lordmorpheus post about the sale ending on January 2.)

thanks to both of you. so im probably order the movies i mentioned above. maybe i will add naked lunch, i wouldnt say "videodrome" was one of my favorite movies but it was a "experince" naked lunch sounds like a odd movie as well.
since im a international customer i cant use any of these coupons anyway.

i wanted to add the kurosawa DVD sets as well. but im probably gonna wait for a 50% sale for that.

currently im watching the when horror came to shinjuku DVD set and the second movie i watched "genocide" looks really good for a DVD.

I watched the StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Third Man the other night and loved it. The transfer is quite impressive in its own right. The Criterion Blu-ray is still my "Holy Grail" of Blu-rays, and I will continue to hunt for it at a reasonable price in used stores and such, but I'm quite thrilled with the StudioCanal Blu-ray.

This movie has some of the greatest visuals in cinema history. Every time I revisit it, I'm blown away.

I've always figured The Third Man as a darker twin of Casablanca, in that it shows a bleaker side of wartime human nature and it is rather unflinching with respect to showing the damage suffered by cities overseas, both in physical and mental terms.

i dont get why the studiocanal release has no eng subs. at some movies and tv shows im fine without eng subs but with these older movies i prefer to have them just in case...
same goes for a lot of KINO releases (fritz lang movies for example)

Yes, the lack of subtitles is the only thing that chaps me about the StudioCanal release, although I know enough of The Third Man from memory of previous viewings that I had no trouble understanding the dialogue.

Over the past two nights, I watched the Kino Blu-rays of The Stranger and Scarlet Street. These two discs are both excellent, and I fortunately had no trouble following the dialogue, despite the lack of subtitles.

Scarlet Street is one of the saddest films ever made. I love it, though.

Yeah they had the Studio Canal 50% off, plus my member 10%, so it was around 8 bucks. Couldn't pass it up! I'd love to find the Criterion of it, and Man Who Fell to Earth, but they are always way too much $$$$.

Anyone see this on the Criterion Facebook page??

All our movies on iTunes are on sale, including Zatoichi's adventures at $5.99 apiece

Edit: Some clarification on that "sale":

The sale price for most is $9.99 HD/$7.99 SD, and some (like Zatoichi) are lower. Sale runs through end of year.

that are the ones i have always a eye on. ;( i have no problems with stuff like game of thrones or forrest gump. they talk like on stage, really clear and easy to follow.
but now add some bad audio quality with maybe a odd way to talk and a strange accent and i might have my problems following the dialog.

This made me chuckle just a little. I did have a color film on my list, The Ice Storm

Besides the Third Man, I've got a stack or 20 -30 discs to watch over Christmas Break, which starts at 5:00pm for me! I think I'm going to split the days up into genres, and one just Criterion release day.... but of course I have 4 Criterion/Eclipse releases that have 3 or more films. Crossing my fingers I get a lot of films in. (the wife isn't always a fan of sitting on the couch for 10+ taking in film after film)
