I wasn't comparing the two but trying to associate just why so many fans are passionate about these comic book superhero movies. While we can pretend it's not about race, in the end, it really is.

The argument is basically the same. Black people don't understand why many fans of the comic series are upset over the casting of Johnny Storm and I was simply placing into context of casting a white actor in the role of a historical black figure like MLK or Malcom X.

It's not about racism, but rather about race and how we perceive each other. It would be like casting a black actor in the role of Abraham Lincoln.

Then maybe you should have said this to begin with instead of comparing a comic book character to MLK.

Your posts only hurt the people here who are making reasonable arguments against the casting The argument isn't the same at all, and if you believe it is, then there is probably no point in even engaging this, but I will anyway. Comparing it to a white MLK is laughable, and a very poor comparison, plain and simple. And you follow it up with another poor example, a black Lincoln. And please don't say what black people don't understand. It's ignorant to say an entire group doesn't understand something because two speak out in disagreement.

Duuude....Johnny Storm is fictional. Lincoln, Malcolm, and MLK were real people, and Johnny Storm has no relevance to race relations. Your comparisons are inappropriate. Characters are icons and symbols of ideals, and they can be portrayed by anybody.

The reason that so most mainstream comic book characters are white is because they were created in the 40s-60s, which were not exactly eras of racial equality. It's time to move on.

I'm actually using someone else's words when I say The Rock is "not black enough" -- that was what someone said I was saying when I pointed out the fact that Dwayne Johnson was only half-black --- so that can of worms was already opened over in the Superman/Batman thread a ways back, but I still stand by it.

To elaborate here, I'll just point out again that Dwayne Johnson is half-Samoan, as well as half-African-Canadian, and I think that playing roles like Roadblock in G.I. Joe and potentially John Stewart in Justice League are cheats on racial casting, since he doesn't resemble an African-American and there are plenty of other qualified black actors out there that happen to be full-blooded, or at least fully resemble these black characters as they were originally depicted. I often wonder how many black people were actually mad about the fact that The Rock played a character in which the role should have went to a full black actor. I'm sure Roadblock has his followers, but I suspect John Stewart may have more and will probably be a more noticable topic of controversy if The Rock is cast in the role.

Probably not many, if any at all, because they don't protest over someone being two shades lighter than whatever you think "black enough" is. Man, you and kemcha are on a roll today. Here's some news for you, the black community doesn't turn its nose up at Dwayne Johnson for being half Samoan.

LOL! You are so wrong about that! I know many of black people (many of them catty women) that hated the fact that Halle Berry isn't entirely black and got the roles she has.

I'm not wrong about it. This conversation is so mind-numbing, I almost feel like it's parody. Where have these "many of black people" that hated Catwoman being played by Halle Berry been for the last decade of my life in the black community?

EDIT: It's so mind-numbing, I thought you said Catwoman. lol

Who says it's wrongful? You? Have you seen the movie? If not how do you know Trank's vision isn't perfect for today's audience? Maybe it isn't what you want but that doesn't make it wrong.

If the movie going public love this movie and make it a success, you will likely still say it was wrong.

The Fantastic Four doesn't belong to you, this movie is going to be made so suck it up and stop ruining these forums with racist, bigoted rants just because it isn't what you want.

It's a movie. It's simply one of many different visions inspired by the source material, and there will be many after it.

Suck. It. Up.

Yes, time to move on.

They should've cast actors of a mix of races, ages, and sexes to play the Fantastic Four - a Japanese girl, a black guy, an old Arabic woman, and a 12 year old Hispanic boy. You know, to impress everyone how "equal" and "multicultural" they are. The bad guy should still be a white man, though.

Look, I don't know anything more about you than you do me, but based on how this is going, I think it's fair to assume that neither one of us is black, right? But, the question of how much open interaction we have with black people can make all the difference on our point of views. I'm not saying because I have black friends and associates that I speak for them, but I can at least say that I've had many open discussions about topics concerning race that most white people would be fearful of having, and I have a pretty good idea of what can spark controversy or be questionable when it comes to differing points of views on the matters. What I do believe for sure is that it's a touchy subject no matter what side of the fence your on, or what color your skin is, and there some things that might be better left undebated --- but I also believe that there is this overcompensation PC going on with white people in which they fear that anything in opposition to what they believe a black person thinks is something that should be avoided... and that's just not true.

You're talking about fictional comic book characters, not some grand race debate. It isn't nearly that deep. And, no, it isn't fair to assume anything along those lines.

It was all those who favor the casting choice that started calling those who didn't "racist" so I think it sure as hell has become a grand race debate. If you don't care about the race change of the character, that's cool, but that doesn't mean that those who do should automatically be labelled racists or bigots.

And which explanation would you be referring to? The one where I said I would like to have the characters that I grew up reading being adapted and depicted as faithfully as traditionally possible?

As I said, if someone wanted to make Blade or Luke Cage or Black Panther, etc.. etc... a white guy, then I'd have just as much a problem with that!

First, you're exaggerating greatly. No one has been running through the thread calling you guys racist or bigots because you don't approve of the casting. If they have, it was based on the content of your posts. And second, I haven't called anyone either of those terms, so that has nothing to do with your back and forth with me.

You inferred as much when you said I was on a roll because of my quip about The Rock not being "black enough"
