It's about $26 shipped too, which isn't too bad

Just a heads-up for anyone that might be interested in doing this, it just got a huge price drop, going down to 7 GBP. It works out to about $15 shipped to the US

I need some advice. I want to get the 3D version of the The Hobbit. Generally I'll always pony up for the extended edition. But the theatrical 3D edition is $14.99 now & the extended 3D is $29.99. I'll be honest that I don't watch a lot of special features. I'm on the fence on whether to get the theatrical 3D edition for $14.99 or waiting for the 3D EE to hit $19.99. I've read mixed stuff on whether the addition of 13 mins is good or not. Ill be honest as well that the singing in the troll village actually sounds bad to me. I'd rather it not be silly.

Thoughts? Advice?

I'm not sure what the future holds in terms of sets but I could see picking up a 2D EE trilogy set when all is said & done at the right price.

If the EE had seem less branching I wouldn't be so unsure...

Get the 3D set now and the complete extended set later. I just got the 3D one from Amazon - it didn't come with a slip.

Well it is a year old movie now, so it's not surprising it won't have a slip.

Of course now that we go and do this, there won't be one for DoS!
I'm sure the UK DVD set will release a matching box set for DOS.

I have not seen the extended edition. What do some of you all think about it compared to the theatrical cut. I have heard that's it does not enhance the story as well as the extended cuts of the LOTR films. I was waiting to purchase these films after the last one was released and then decide to get the extended cuts or the theatrical ones.

I hope so...but if there's one thing I've learned, is that studios are consistant in one thing: being inconsistant.

Wow, this release has some beautiful packaging. Thick, left-handed slipbox with black amaray case. The discs have gorgeous artwork also. Well done. Still have to watch it now to comment on the presentation itself.

Does anyone think the regular extended edition will drop lower than the $19.95 price by the holidays?

Impossible to say, but in the year the regular EE Blu-ray of Unexpected Journey has been in release, it has never dropped below $19.95. So if I had to guess, I would say no.

May have to wait until the extended set for both Smaugs comes out - or even the trilogy () ext. set. Personally, I bought the first extended relatively cheaply (I believe), but I'm not buying this. It's an incomplete story and I'm sure a "fuller" version will be released. I can wait, plenty of movies to watch.

I actually own the 3D extended version (Best Buy steelcase). However, I'm not too interested in 3D any longer and I cannot figure out a way for my Oppo to let me watch it in 2D. I wanted to watch the extended versions of the first and second movie before going to see the third film movie next month - and both are $19.95 on Amazon so I am thinking of just springing for both but wondered if perhaps they will drop in price around Black Friday. I am guessing they won't though.

Are you saying the extended version is not going to be the final cut of the movie?

With the new movie just coming out, it's a coin flip. But if I had to guess, I'd agree with you on "not". Sorry to hear about you're having to buy it again. That's why I'm waiting, I'm too poor for all this double & fripple-dipping.

P.S. Have you tried calling Oppo, they're very helpful (just in case it's not handy : 650-961-1118).
P.S.S Sorry, missed it. Probably not, but sometimes there are added features to pry that last buck out of completists.

The Oppo doesn't necessarily need a setting to watch the movie in 2D. Most 3D displays have their own settings via Menu: Menu > Setup >3D Settings > 3D Eyewear ON or OFF.
Display Select [3D Eyewear OFF] to view a 3D movie in 2D.
