AK's Dreams is from Warner so that won't happen. I did contact Warner Archive through facebook recently to request it, and they responded saying that WHV is considering it for release.

Blake Edwards's The Party is definitely not coming from Criterion, but from Kino.

A few words about last night's viewing...

In a letter to his parents on the eve of battle, a young and unassuming British soldier writes, “The war machine keeps growing, and I am getting smaller and smaller.” Stuart Cooper's 1975 film, Overlord, which takes its title from the code name for the Allied invasion of Normandy, juxtaposes low-key and often-dreamlike montages of this soldier's training and preparation with archival World War II footage, resulting in one of cinema's most hauntingly fatalistic depictions of how one unique individual can become hopelessly lost in the cogs of war. This odd blend of lyrical surrealism and raw documentary occurs almost seamlessly, since the story of our fictional young private is told by way of grainy black-and-white film stock that compliments the footage supplied by the Imperial War Museum. As the studio footage addresses the main character's assimilation into the British army through his eyes, the archival footage of ships, planes, bombings, and frightening metal contraptions conveys an omniscient point-of-view as if to reinforce the concept that this man, with all of his experiences and dreams, is just one of thousands of pawns in the grand scheme of military strategy. One of the film's most subtly jarring moments shows the soldiers burning their personal papers before being sent to the front lines.

On this Criterion Blu-ray, the high definition transfer of Overlord remains true to the often-damaged archival prints while simultaneously accentuating the uncanny poetry of their interplay with studio footage. The final result will never be mistaken for the sparkling black-and-white splendor of Criterion titles like Persona or The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, but the video quality and sound quality here is ideal for the purpose of depicting the unyielding machinery of the world's most destructive war to date. A series of supplements sheds light on the contributions of the Imperial War Museum, while an informative audio commentary by Stuart Cooper and actor Brian Stirner provides an entertaining and enlightening listen.

Announcements should happen tomorrow.

I'm going to see Godzilla (2014) at the theater tomorrow after work, so I'll probably miss out on a lot of the announcement fun, but the tradeoff is worth it.

Tonight, I'm going to revisit my Criterion Blu-ray of Godzilla (1954) to get into the groove for tomorrow.

Some Lars von Trier news; Zentropa is working on restoring his earlier films. So we can expect some new blu-rays in the future

I went to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earlier today, figuring it might be the only time I'd get to see it in IMAX before Godzilla came out. But the joke was on me, as the 3D showings were in two different auditoriums, but neither was the IMAX one.

Anyway, stopped at the B&N near the theater and picked up the Criterion Godzilla to, as you put it, "get in the groove" for seeing the new film. Picked up Rififi and Ace in the Hole as well, for the B2G1.

Awesome. I never expected that we might get The Kingdom on Blu-ray. It bothered me, though, that they were talking about "a 90-minute episode" or referring to it as a "3-hour movie". That suggests that they're restoring the 2-part International Release Version, rather than the original TV mini-series version, which was four episodes of about an hour to an hour fifteen each. It also looked like they were doing it in widescreen rather than the original 4x3.

Lars may have not wanted it to be 4x3 - wasn't that same situation with Koyaaniqatsi? I prefer the original aspect ratio as it was more visual and bold and just looked better, but all we get now is the widescreen which cuts a lot of the image, but that show he wanted it to look ... annoying lol

When I read posts like this it makes me so jealous that us UKians can't just wonder into HMV or the like and pick up Criterions!

1. Dancer In The Dark
2. Melancholia
3. Dogville
4. Breaking The Waves
Of those four, I would rank them thusly:

1. Dogville
2. Melancholia/Dancer in the Dark/Breaking the Waves

Thanks for posting this. I can't believe we could get a blu ray of The Kingdom. The DVDs really look like shit, too.

I just finished The Rules of the Game. Excellent film!

I definitely see a few rewatches in the near future to get all of the players down.

Complete guess:

The Lost Weekend
Love Streams
A Matter of Life and Death
Z
My Dinner With Andre

(Though are there any indiciations what the next Powell/Pressburger is to be? In an ideal world maybe a box could round out some of the lesser-known ones.)

I really liked that movie. I watched it like 5 times just to keep enjoying all of the chaos in the latter half.

God I Love that movie. It's INSANE! And it's so easy to see how many different films, over the decades and decades and decades have riffed off it. That was actually one of the first Criterions I ever got (the DVD).

So Much fun.

Everything falls together beautifully.

I read Ebert's review after I finished the film and he touches on how it is similar to Citizen Kane's style where each plane of focus has something going on in it, whether it be the background or the foreground.

Good stuff!

Oh absolutely. In fact, I think a lot of the things touched on in the film are still around today, especially with the love quarreling and the misperceptions.
