A few years back we might well have settled for a lazy dvd upscale of Nightbreed just so this honestly rather unloved and forgotten about title was easier to get hold of.
Then once the guys behind Occupy Midian helped locate the workprints and spent an INSANE amount of time reconstructing the film with Clive, as well as redubbing the soundtrack and getting Doug Bradley back into the studio to rerecord his dialogue.
Thus began the long road of touring cult film festivals all over the world, listening to feedback and tweaking the film further until the Cabal Cut was in a saleable state.
When Scream Factory announced they were releasing the title we all expected that we would get the admittedly terribly jarring Cabal Cut featuring all those cut shots from a variety of VHS based sources.
Instead SF have gone above and beyond to not only seek out the actual lost film elements which pretty much everybody - including Clive himself - thought simply no longer existed.
Then for them to have worked a deal with WB - whom rarely if ever license their titles to third parties - to release the theatrical cut of the film on Blu Ray as well is just incredible proof of how seriously SF have taken this release.
I cannot wait to see the quality of the finished film and I'm sure the extra's will deliver too. This is no quick lazy release of a library title, but a cult film with a respectively small fanbase getting the kind of treatment usually reserved for "jewel in the crown" type film's such as The Wizard of Oz and Lawrence of Arabia. So yes the Limited Edition is a lot of money, but then I at least have no qualms whatsoever in handing over that sort of money if the work and effort put into the release deserves it.

I agree!

I'm extremely broke right now, so the $80 price is too high. However, I do plan to buy that version and will save up for it, since I'm a big fan of the film. And I never thought the actual negatives to the lost footage would ever be found. So this is amazing news and shows they really went above and beyond the call of duty on this release! Most companies would take the easy and laziest route in releasing a film. It was looking like the extended version would be of inferior workprint VHS quality, and we'd just have to be content with it. Since the actual footage was lost or didn't exist any longer. So this news is a revelation.

I enjoy the theatrical cut, since it's the only version ever release until later this year. So I'm glad that's include in some form, especially if the changes are quite drastic. I know the theatrical version is compromised. But it's still a unique film and I've always found it entertaining. And I'm beyond happy I'll finally be able to see the original directors cut after 25 years of knowing about it's troubled production, and assuming I'd never get the chance to see the original version.

So while the cost may seem excessive. It's pretty reasonable when you consider how much of a cult title this is, and it must have cost a ton of money to put together, let alone searching for that lost footage and restoring it. Also as some others pointed out, you'd all be having a heart attack if you ever paid laserdisc prices for a special edition! So you got it so easy today, but are showing how spoiled you are by complaining about high prices of some releases.

While I'd like to get the poster from Shout Factory. I think I'll see what the pre-order prices are on Amazon and elsewhere before I decide where to purchase it. I may be broke, and must save to buy it. But I'll still look for the best deals around.

Oh and the news about them finding the long lost, thought to be destroyed footage makes me wonder whether they could locate the uncut gore scenes from the Friday the 13th series? Again, we're told the footage is long gone. But the same was said for the Nightbreed footage. The footage could be sitting in a vault, a closet, storage area, mislabeled and so forth. So until extensive searching for the footage is done. It can't be said the footage doesn't exist until every angle is checked, and I doubt it was. Since it seems the only search went as far as Paramount's vault, and not elsewhere. Yet look where the My Bloody Valentine footage turned up. So again, the footage may be out there somewhere.

So this NightBreed release is certainly a 'holy grail' of sorts to me, since it's something I've wanted to see forever, and never thought it'd be possible. An uncut Friday the 13th sequels release is another holy grail for myself, since again, it may never happen. But news like this gives me hope.

I'm frankly stunned that not only are they using the actual film elements for the cut footage, but the theatrical cut is being included as well.

You've been charged already? No online store should charge a customer's credit card, not until the item is in stock and been shipped. The release date is in October, which is 4 months away... I wouldn't preorder a movie that far in advance anyway!

My emoticon wasn't referring to price. It was referring to the people that have a bizarre reflex to ignorantly mention Twilight Time when they see a title that they feel is too expensive.

I do spend big bucks on discs when the edition merits it and I have disposable funds. Last time I did that was for the French edition of Cimino's Heaven's Gate. It cost me over 90 dollars.
I want that edition so bad. I already have the Criterion Edition, but that French release is a work of art.

Why can't people express their concern about the high price and talk about what exactly went into this release to deserve such a high price point? Thanks for the suggestions though...
Absolutely.

Tremendous news regarding the LE, and I have happily pre-ordered a copy.

I also have to agree with those who think the complaints here are ridiculous. This is not the Demons SteelBook fiasco or a Twilight Time release, instead, it's more like the great DVD releases Anchor Bay used to produce.

Clearly, the biggest selling point of this release is that Shout! were somehow able to access and reconstruct the Director's Cut from film elements...it is very important to note that the definitive version of the film with some extras is going to be available for a modest price.

The remastered Director's Cut has an MSRP of $29.97 and is being sold by Shout! for $23.93. Again, this edition will probably be even cheaper elsewhere between now and release date, so chances are high you would be able to get it for $19.99 or less.

Shout! have been extremely clear that WB are the cause for the theatrical cut coming only in the LE set, and that the LE be limited in number. I don't know if people realize, but WB generally does not license their properties to anyone, and they have only made a handful of exceptions in the Blu-ray era. The obvious one is Badlands, but honestly, who knows how they justify not licensing more, even to Criterion, when they have so many great films just sitting in their vaults.

Now if Shout! had released the LE with just the two versions of the film, and having to limit it, and pay WBs licensing fees (and again, I don't know just how they managed to twist WBs arm), then that's already an expensive set. The bonus BD is a great way for Shout! to add obvious value to the set, for those who wouldn't perceive the costs for the Theatrical Cut as wise.

For someone like me, for whom the film is a blind buy, I find it much easier to justify $80 MSRP for two Blu-ray film discs and a Blu-ray bonus disc, as opposed to $60 or even $50 MSRP for just the two Blu-ray film discs in an LE set. Of course, I am trusting, given the track record with Scream Factory Collector's Editions, that the bonus BD will be worth a portion of the extra cost, but if that turns out not to be the case (which I doubt), I can always cancel and order the standard version instead.

Remember, $79.97 is the MSRP for the LE, and the price that Shout! is selling it for, and not the price you will pay via Amazon.com or other retailers who will stock the set, where it will likely be significantly cheaper.

I am glad the amazon pre-orders will go live next week. Still undecided wether to get the limited or regular edition. I already own the theatrical cut on dvd, might just settle for the regular edition as for me the director's cut is what it's all about. I do wish they'd specify what exactly those extras on the third disc entail or at least give some images of the booklet and artwork.

Basically it's 56 $ more for the theatrical cut and the extras; the former I've already seen and the extras... for that money I at least expect every promotional featurette of the movie to be included, interviews back in the day as well as new ones, a decent documentary about the movie interviewing Barker, Cronenberg, Doug Bradley, Danny Elfman... as well as the original VHS workprint they showed, "the cabal cut".

I hope more details about the extras will emerge as it will help me to make my decision.

Just bought this off Ebay. I had this VHS promo when I was about 15. I couldn't remember if I still had it hanging around somewhere, but it has always stayed in my mind, so I wanted to make sure I had a copy. I've always thought it was pretty cool.

It's hands down the best edition, and the script with Cimino's notes is worth the price alone.

Hello ??
I dunno. When I go food shopping and I buy 500 grams of potatoes and 500 grams of steak, I always feel that I'm being ripped off. Jeez 500 grams of potatoes costs nothing next to 500 grams of steak. Bastards.

I wish folks would stop whining about the expensive LE. If you don't want it or can't afford it, don't buy it! Bravo to Shout for restoring this film and providing the consumer options.

Such entitlement these days - I guess that's the new American way...

You are absolutely correct!

But, I also have to agree (weather you like it or not) that it is an insane price tag of $80. Yes i understand that they restored it and i understand it has many features and yes i understand that it has 2 or 3 versions of the film, But at the end of the day you are still paying $80 for just 1 movie (The same Film). This isnt a trilogy box set or a steelbook or a digibook or anything, (it is one single film). This also isnt the only film ever to get a full remaster restoration, there are many others and many others that i am sure are going to be released in the future. Personally i can not justify paying $80 for just 2 versions of the same film and extras and a cool slipcover/artwork...

To each there own choices and thoughts. If you are a huge fan and want to spend $80 on a single film go for it and if you don't then you don't.

In case this hasn't been posted here before:

"The limited edition will have a reverse wrap inside that will have both the Joel Robinson and Ralph M art. Also, the theatrical cut (which will be in its own Blu ray case) will have two theatrical poster art designs - one on each side of the wrap - to choose from."

This Laserdisc comparison that people keep throwing around is really not relevant. Laserdiscs were all similarly priced high. There was no reason for people to expect lower prices - perhaps they wanted lower prices, but it wouldn't be expected. The reason for people's surprise with the high price points for a number of blu-rays is because these are not common prices. And of course usually there are reasons for the higher price like with Demons, this, and Possession (to name a few more recent ones) - but it doesn't make the higher price point easy to swallow for everyone. Again becasue it's not the norm - like it was for laserdisc - it's a different mind set now, with the advent of DVD/Blu-ray, where movies can be had for much more affordable prices.
So yes, some poeople will complain, some people won't, but the laserdisc comparison is irrelevant.
Personally, although I've presented as skeptical in my previous posts, if the transfer is as stunning as other high priced releases, then it makes the investment more worth it.

First world problems.
