Maybe it'll be just a lightsaber floating in space, maybe they'll be a lot of other wreckage floating around in space too! If there is a hand attached it'll burn up in the atmosphere, but the lightsaber'll make it through. Gotta say that is kind of a cool opening.

Clarke said that he considered every sequel to be in a seperate universe to an extent which is supposed to explain all the mistakes/changes between things so in one case he is still dead and the other he is alive. Plus that is set 1000 years from now and not a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - no doubt they have better doctors by then

Cloud city is in the planets atmosphere. They go outside and are breathing. Problem is Bespin is a gas planet so it couldnt be Lukes hand. It really does seem like a bad script.

I like the idea of starting off the movie with a rogue trooper crash landing on "a desert planet" though. Perhaps he's carrying Luke's severed hand + lightsaber, the actual one from Cloud City, which is the MacGuffin that sets the story in motion. (Remember, Luke's hand simply tumbles into Bespin's atmosphere, it didn't get destroyed in Empire so it's totally plausible that it survived in that manner, getting frozen by the atmosphere and then found by some enterprising Imperial lackey or space pirate.)

I also like the cloned Luke idea (Jesus Christ, did I actually just agree with nagys?), perhaps matey escapes with the proof of THE hand and desperately needs to get to the New Republic to warn them of the danger. But he's intercepted, much like Leia was in Star Wars, and picks up some stragglers who come along for the ride. They eventually make it to Coruscant and that's when they realise that they need to bring old Luke out of hiding in order to combat the new threat. Hell, if Solo is to die in this one then it'd be awesome if Clone Luke is the one that kills him. Cue "Nooooooooooo!", and real Luke then fights his clone in the climactic lightsaber duel.

This is of course very similar to Heir of the Empire, but some folks consider Zahn's Thrawn trilogy to be the sequels anyway, so a few nods in that direction would be very, very cool IMO.
