Let me see if I can help you or not. I was really into upscaling and have a Samsung BD-P1200 with REON and a Onkyo TX-SR875 also with REON. They are both used on my Samsung HL56A650 1080P DLP TV.

I have compared my SS BD player to my PS3 on standard DVD playback. Well the BD-P1200 does do a better job at upscaling to 1080P. However it does not make it look like HD quality. Some discs do look better than others but overall there is only so much you can do with the standard def sources in our everyday home equipment. I should also note the BD-P1200 does look better than the PS3 for Bluray playback but lacks newer DTS & Dolby codecs.

As for my Onkyo TX-SR875 I mainly use it for my Moto HD DVR when I'm watching standard def material. Not always though I usually only apply 1080P when it may benefit. The problem I have with it though is the color is as not bright as it is when in passthrough.

So no miracles here for me and I've tried every possible combination of user settings for the TV, BD player and even the hidden menu on the Onkyo. If you are in need of a new Bluray player and do not want extra equipment then maybe look for an upconverting BD player. Maybe get an upconverting dvd player for dvd use if you already have a Bluray player. Being patient would be the best solution perhaps.

I have no experience with Realta or other upconversion technologys so maybe somebody with that technology/s can lend you their thoughts. I really do not think however it will perform miracles like we all wish.

More research and maybe you will find the right solution for you. Good luck!
