Default TV Size for Viewing 1080p

Curious, as there seems to be a lot of debate about this.

I have heard from some that 1080p STARTS to get noticed at 32', but some are dead-set on the fact that you need AT LEAST a 42' to see the difference between 720p and 1080p. Others, still, say that 50'+ is the only size to consider 1080p over 720p.

Please provide your reasoning, as well as why you think companies sell 1080p on smaller screens if it can't be noticed by the average consumer, knowing that is costs more to make a 1080p TV.
