To be fair, it's Fox that did the editing back in 1977. Fox still holds broadcast rights to SUSPIRIA so whenever it airs on TV or cable it will always be their version.

And Lyle is correct, SUSPIRIA was shot anamorphically so it was cropped/pan-and-scanned to 1.78:1 from the original 2.35:1 frame.

From the day it was announced, it was not going to arrive until 2015. They're doing a whole new scan of the original negative, so the disc was not on the immediate horizon. The OP still has all the relevant details.

It's both a company and a format.

Since the German BD was worked on by the cinematographer, is there any chance this would be used as a loose reference for the Synapse, ignoring the inherent faults in the master that the German BD used, of course. I'm curious as to what they are using for a reference. I know they're using the original negs here, but what about changes that were done in post? The colors on the old Anchor Bay DVD were better than the BDs in a lot of ways, but even then, the colors are kind of sickly looking viewing that disc today. All of those old AB discs seem to look odd nowadays. Or are they using a theatrical print as a reference?

Thanks to the cinematographer of The Bird With the Crystal Plumage working on the UK Bluray , Arrow ended up releasing a cropped worthless mess .
Hopefully its not the same idiot who worked on Suspiria

pretty sure its a slipbox. but they used the same old master for this release that has already been used for the UK release.
should have gotten the "german" mediabook. its currently the "best" release before synapse does their release.

Actually, cinematographer Luciano Tovoli supervised the atrocious 2007 color timing, not the color timing on the new German Blu-ray. All that work was done by Torsten Kaiser working from the 2007 HDCAM-SR master tape. Torsten used an I.B. Technicolor print on loan from the BFI as a guide, and I believe Synapse Films is also working on getting access to an I.B. Technicolor print for reference.

So it seems best that if directors cannot be obtained then leave the film alone and just release it without tweaking anything

Well, if you just scan a negative and release it with no tweaking the result will also be a mess, because negatives are not the final word, they always go through a color timing/grading process. I think it's generally best to work with a reference film copy, i.e. an I.B. Technicolor print. Tovoli was likely going by memory back in 2007, or perhaps he felt like a kid in a candy store with all the knobs and controls at his fingertips into the digital color timing suite and went way, WAY overboard with the color tweaking and contrast boosting.

What's the verdict on this limited edition 4 disk mediabook version??

http://www.diabolikdvd.com/category/World-Cinema-(Browse)/Italy/Suspiria-(LE-4-Disc-Import-DVD-[sl]-Blu~Ray-Combo-Region-B).html

Good audio and video quality?? Or a waste of nearly $60

It's the best currently available. They have corrected the colors as much as possible, though some problems remain because their are baked into the master, but it's the best it has looked on BD so far.

You only get the original English theatrical track in mono, though. The 2.0 English Stereo track is a later remix.

Unless you are a hardcore fan or just really want to see it now, I would wait for Synapse's release next year.

well for $60 I wouldn't jump. For me, I have been waiting since the 2 disc limited edition DVD to jump because I have always heard of bad color timing, etc. so waiting a few months for the possibility of getting something much better and at least much less expensive seems the way to go.

I would be kicking myself if I spent the money on an OOP dvd or import and have something just as good or better come along for less money and hassle.
