First of all, I don't believe Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay warrants a slipcover. Do you??
Secondly, if they are going to put one on the 2nd movie, they NEED one on the first. Let me beat some of you to the punch with your "if you don't like the slipcover, just take it off" It makes me angry that some executive would decide to put one on a sequel but not the original, especially with them being released the same day.... What are your thoughts on this slipcover and/or slipcovers in general? I think they are appropriate depending on the release. EDITED: To remove questioning what the movie made in the box office, due to the fact that other low grossing movies in my collection have slipcovers (jumper, employee of the month, etc) Last edited by jwalmz; 07-29-2008 at 09:57 PM. |

In this case, along with many others, the slipcover is to show that the release is a special edition and/or Unrated editions. It's not a big deal, it's just an extra marketing strategy.

actually its more of a theft deterrent put on new releases, I know that it can be easli removed but that was their thinking for the dvd releases. I read this a few years back

I am not a slipcover enthusiast, so maybe I'm not the best choice to weigh in, but I've never known the carboard case to be a reflection of merit on the movie. This isnt anything new, even for Blu, right? Jumper had a slipcover.
You seem fired up, perhaps I missed the sarcasm? |

Also, I misspoke when questioning how much it brought in at the box office. I have many of the titles that were mentioned to the contrary(i.e Jumper) So, perhaps the more appropriate question is what is the criteria for giving a movie a slipcover? Someone earlier mentioned a special release, however that doesnt seem to be the case. |

Generally speaking, slip covers tend to be attached to movies coming out for the first time just after their theatrical release. Granted, this hasn't been as common on Blu-Ray as it has been on DVD, though lately it does seem like that trend is starting to grow on the Blu-Ray side of things, likely because Blu-Ray in general is growing. Also, sometime new special edition releases of movies can get slip covers. The Mummy movies come to mind. Smaller catalog releases tend not to have them. Though in general it's at the discretion of the studio releasing the movie to determine what the qualifications for giving a movie a slip cover is. That being said, I do wish that both Harold and Kumar movies had the slip cover. |
