The Deer Hunter is one of those movies that rips at your insides for so many different reasons. I mean, not only are the goings on in the film itself intense (I won't spoil any of the details), but there's the realization that John Cazale is about to lose his fight with cancer, too. And, to top it off, if you watch Meryl closely in the scenes she's in, every so often, there's an underlying sadness to her performance that's just barely perceptible. She loved John, and fought like hell to keep him in the movie. As far as I know, that was one of the first times she really asserted herself in Hollywood, and she's been an absolute powerhouse since. But De Niro, Streep, and especially Christopher Walken gave clinics on acting. The Deer Hunter should be in every film collection. It's absolutely essential.
