my guess is if somebody doesn't have their PS3 hooked up to the internet, they probably don't even have the firmware to have trophies.

i just helped a guy at work connect his PS3 to the internet, he was running the launch firmware on it for the past 20 months.

Me too! Though I just gave him that latest update on a USB compared to connect to the internet. He has internet connectivity at home, but he primarily just uses it for his kid to play games on and not for Blu-Rays.

Though I recently changed that as I lent his Kill Bill. Now that the seed has been planted, he'll start to rent them compared to DVD and bring his PS3 upstairs more often.

That's probably true. Honestly, for me getting trophies is a big deal right now, but by next month I'm probably not going to care as much as I'll be spending more time playing different games than trying to collect trophies. That's how I felt when I got my Xbox 360 too. A year from now, I'll be more interested in my gamer level than my individual trophies.

Sony should upgrade the friends list, so it can have a number next to each avatar saying total number of trophies. i hate waiting for that stupid gamer card thing to load up! Plus it should say a how many you have got out of your possible maximum dependign on number of games you have. for example 69/150.

I don't see an entitlement for trophies so don't mind when expansions have their own trophies (and indeed would kind of expect it). For purposes of bragging rights, etc the comparison would reveal which were for expansions and which weren't.

I agree with most of your comments. I was so looking forward to get the platnuim trophy in burnout paradise (My first game with trophys by the way), but i cant now because ive gotta either buy EOJ with the eye toy, or buy it on its own. I know you can use any USB camera but its not the point.

+1

I don't have a USB camera or the Eye, and I'm not going to buy one just to get a trophy. I would never use it again so it would be wasted money. I think having to spend money in order to get a Platinum trophy when the trophies are a free addition is just ridiculous.

The Eye is pretty useful. I use tha instead of the headset when playing online. It also came in handy playing Burnout.

I agree that requiring DLC or peripheral purchases is kinda lame nickel and dime marketing. I also concur that no game should EVER require that you own another game in order to get a trophy. That should have been written in the 10 commandments of trophy making, in my opinion.

Personally, I don't see trophies as anything special. Frankly, games like RB6V(1&2) already had what I like and I've always been surprised more games didn't. They had a list of achievements (or whatever you want to call them) for you to try and complete in the game. It made a GREAT way to help players find new and inventive ways to play as well as discover some things they may not have otherwise. They are a great roadmap to maximizing player exposure to content and fun. If it takes trophies to get all games to have such a 'roadmap to content', then so be it. But, that is all I really see trophies being. A guide for the game.

I never understood how so many multiplat games would have great lists of achievements on 360 but not offer the list to PS3 (even before Trophies) as Drake's and RB6V have. It was ridiculous.

Anyhow, that is all I see trophies being and all they should be, in my opinion. They are not a competitive item or a device for measuring the size of one's e-peen. They are just a great guide to maximizing content in a game for the player.

Keep them simple like that and they will always be great, make them competitive and their value will plummet (just as Achievements on 360 have with leaderboards where all players just rent the hell out of cheese games with easy achievements just to get their Gamer Score up... lameness).

Aside from all that, I am totally sick of trophies being added to games retroactively. If the game is already out without trophies, leave it that way. Move on, please. Sony just needs to require them in all games moving forward.

Good post proteus. I love the ideas of trophies because it simply extra challenges to do for you to "finish" the game. I'm loving the WipeoutHD trophies right now. I don't mind that they are adding trophies retroactively, gives more incentives for people to maybe buy the game if they hadn't before and for others it's a chance to dust off an old game you probably loved ( Uncharted obviously). GTA IV i never finished so i don't mind starting over and while I did finish MGS4 I will go back and do the trophies simply because I want to play it again.

The Eye has many uses, and it sure as heck beats long-distance phone calls with the daughter up north since we just video conference each other so she can talk to her Mom. Also comes in handy for Warhawk and any other online co-op games that support online chat. Works great with my Mac G4 as well, so the purchase of the Eye was not a waste by any means.

I understand the frustration with not being able to earn a trophy based on one's accessory collection, but as it is, trophies to me are just icing on the cake. Personal accomplishment is great, but I personally don't care if I'm advertising it to the rest of the world or not via the trophy system.
