Alice and TMNT were very average movies that had I watched in 2D I would have been extremely disappointed but in 3D that are visually dynamic. The recent run of BvS, CA, Alice, X Men, and TMNT have been great for 3D fans, they have been getting 3D right lately.
Yeah, it's a bummer but hopefully the worldwide fans will show up in theaters to support this awesome 3D presentation. This strong 3D is what every hybrid 3D movie should strive for if they're not already. I would go to see it again but next week is another new 3D movie, then another after that, and so on.

Must buy on blu ray 3D.

Saw this in IMAX ,

Everything is over the top , the action , the villain , the 3D , it was like a 3D motion ride at times.

I liked the story a bit better in the first movie , but i still had fun watching this one.

With so many great pop outs & depth , It makes another good argument for converted films vs Native.

Nice trailer to simulate the 3D effect. I remember another trailer (The Jungle Book?) gave this overlap effect and at the end of the trailer, didn't even bother mentioning it was in 3D. This one thankfully highlights the 3D showing, which is the best 3D of the year in theaters so far. Glad you liked it Everret.

That water scene, so cool in 3D. Even the ending had strong 3D above the city.

With the official weekend opening numbers, if this one performs exactly like the previous one in terms of its "hold," it'll come in just under $103 million domestically. This one has a higher CinemaScore (A-) and is aimed at a younger audience, so Paramount's hoping it actually holds better. If it performs exactly in line with CinemaScore's own multiplier-to-score data like the last one did, it'll finish at $123.6 million domestic. Either way a big drop from just over $191 million last time around. A lot of box office "professional" sites are suggesting that, thanks to being earlier in the summer and having more competition going forward, it'll actually drop faster than the previous film and fail to reach $100 million.

The only major foreign market it's opened in already is Mexico, where it made $4.2 million for the weekend - a modest drop from the last movie's $6 million on opening weekend there.

For comparison, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze opened at $20 million ($40.8 million adjusted to 2016 prices) compared to the original 1990 film's $25.4 million ($51.5 million adjusted) opening, a much more modest drop. It wound up making about 58% of the first. If Out of the Shadows makes the same percentage of its predecessor it'll be at around $111 million, which is possible but, by most pro analyses, a bit higher than likely.

Thanks UFAlien. That sounds promising. You're right, the first one had a good life to it. Worldwide ticket sales will count the most this time.

I am hoping to see this. Exams are going on, so if they are still showing it in 3D by next week, I'll be glad. I liked the 3D in the first when I saw it in theaters.

I saw it last night in IMAX 3D. Wow, 3-D is just as good as the first one if not better. High Medium to Strong throughout. Fun summer popcorn movie. Unfortunately, it seems to not be performing well at the box office as the first one, which is disappointing. Some are speculating that they should have released the film in August like the first one was two years ago. There's too much competition right now in June. Sandwiched between X-Men, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Finding Dory.

I think Paramount sacrificed TMNT to save Ben Hur, which has been delayed.

Ben Hur delayed? Interesting, thanks for the news. I bet you're right about the order of the release.

Nice, thanks for the details on your 3D viewing. I agree, fantastic 3D.

Thanks Revgen. Not sure when the rest of the world aside from a few countries will get this in theaters, but hopefully asap. Not sure why it wasn't a simultaneous release worldwide as I believe part 1 was. June was a mistake IMO, but that's business.

Yep. According to Variety, it was supposed to come out in February, but they changed it to August, partially because TMNT did so well that month in 2014. So far, TMNT hasn't done too bad, #1 this week in sales, beating X-Men and Alice, but IMHO it could have been a lot better in a different timeslot.

Delays that are done not because of production, but because the studio is worried about losing money can be a bad sign. Perhaps Ben Hur didn't test well with preview audiences and Paramount is hoping an August timeslot will help.

Thanks Revgen. So it was supposed to be released in February but pushed to August. Definitely clears things up with the Turtles getting pushed forward to June's heavy competition month.

Prime Focus updated their website with an article about their work on the film. Of note; the CGI was converted, not native, though they did have mathematical "z-depth" information to work from and referenced their work on the first film to make the shaping of the Turtles consistent.

Also interesting is the fact that Prime Focus added particle effects like floating dust in the sewer hideout and extra water splashes in the river to enhance the 3D effect.

Thanks UF. Good info.

Sadly, the movie didn't cover its costs to produce, and the odds of a sequel 3 are very slim. These two movies have some of the strongest 3D when the turtles are onscreen in modern cinema, so it's disappointing there won't be a 3rd.

Will it not make money with the international BO?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
Out of the Shadows

Domestic Total as of Jun. 28, 2016: $78,063,580
Distributor: Paramount Release Date: June 3, 2016
Genre: Action / Adventure Runtime: 1 hrs. 52 min.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Production Budget: $135 million

Summary Daily Weekend Weekly Foreign Similar Movies

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $78,063,580 50.2%
+ Foreign: $77,399,647 49.8%
= Worldwide: $155,463,227
Supposedly theaters get the lowest profit on opening week with a good portion going to the studio, but every week after that, the theaters earn more and more, while the movie itself earns less for the studio unless it really rakes it in. That's possibly why so often we'll hear Disney state in the press "The Lone Ranger was a loss" or "John Carter was a loss" on the opening weekend. I would think, but they didn't even give it more time to earn more, why are they writing it off so soon?

So if the movie cost $135+ to make and market, a good return might be $270 million + if theaters get a good cut of the box office.

http://entertainment.howstuffworks.c...tribution2.htm
Here's an interesting article, though I didn't read all of it carefully yet.

Quote:
During the film's opening week, the studio might take 70 to 80 percent of gross box office sales. By the fifth or sixth week, the percentage the studio takes will likely shrink to about 35 percent, said Steven Krams, president of International Cinema Equipment Co.

http://money.cnn.com/2002/03/08/smbusiness/q_movies/
CNN suggests most of the ticket sales go to the studio though.

This one's doing pretty well in China, at least. It just opened at #1 there and made $26.1 million Saturday and Sunday. That's a significant improvement over the first. It was co-produced by the Chinese companies Alibaba and Wanda. Unfortunately it seems like it still has a long way to go to break even and likely won't hit that mark theatrically.
