Criterion Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words (2015)

Quote:
Whether headlining films in Sweden, Italy, or Hollywood, Ingrid Bergman always pierced the screen with a singular soulfulness. With this new documentary, made on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of Bergman’s birth, director Stig Björkman allows us unprecedented access to her world, culling from the most personal of archival materials—letters, diary entries, photographs, and Super 8 and 16 mm footage Bergman herself shot—and following her from youth to tumultuous married life and motherhood. Intimate and artful, this lovingly assembled portrait, narrated by actor Alicia Vikander, provides luminous insight into the life and career of an undiminished legend.

Disc Features:
  • High-definition digital transfer, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New interview with director Stig Björkman
  • Super 8 home movies shot by Bergman in the 1930s
  • Two deleted scenes, showing Bergman’s daughters reading an essay she wrote at age seventeen and an interview with film historian and Bergman scholar Rosario Tronnolone
  • Extended versions of scenes featuring interviews with actors Sigourney Weaver and Liv Ullmann and Bergman’s daughter Isabella Rossellini and with the three Rossellini siblings
  • Clip from the 1932 film Landskamp, featuring Bergman in her first screen role
  • Outtakes from Bergman’s 1936 film On the Sunny Side
  • Music video for Eva Dahlgren’s song “The Movie About Us,” which is included on the film’s soundtrack
  • Trailer
  • New English subtitle translation
  • PLUS: An essay by film scholar Jeanine Basinger

New cover by F. Ron Miller

I'm most excited about this one, too. I've never seen it, but I love Bergman and this is a documentary I think I'd really enjoy.

In a month where Criterion is releasing some great films-two by Welles, and one by Altman, I, too, am most excited by the Bergman doc. Can't wait to own it. Ingrid is my favorite actress, the quintessence of glamour, beauty and class that the Golden Age of Hollywood embodied.

I'll be picking up her 3 Films by Rossellini set during the Barnes & Noble sale in July, and pre-ordering this as soon as it becomes available.

The Bergman documentary is fantastic. Totally engrossing and full of never before footage from home movies - some in colour.

My only qualms with the film was the use of Michael Nyman's score from Wonderland and a cheesy song over the end credits.

It's actually an original score by Nyman, though he does reuse two cues from Wonderland, which is something he does fairly frequently.

Didn't know Michael Nyman did the score. I love his style of music, so I'm interested!

Not day one, but I'm probably buying the Blu-ray later on. Hope it will be on Hulu one day, so that I can preview it before buying it.

I'm with all those who said that this is their most anticipated. Ingrid is also my favorite actress ever, and I'm really looking forward to this. The extras look great, as well.

It just feels to me like this should have been an extra on a another feature disc and not a stand-alone release. Still excited about getting it though.

That would be one heck of an extra, considering it's 114 min., and that doesn't even include all the extras.

I'm extremely surprised this is actually getting a dedicated release, as opposed to being an extra to an Ingrid Bergman movie.

The cover art reminds me of the Rossellini-Bergman box. So, even though it is a standalone, it feels like a supplement to the box.

Yeah, making a theatrical movie like this just an extra would be odd. It has already gotten a release in Scandinavia on Blu-ray and DVD.

What an awesome movie. Rented it without many expectations, but was really blown away by the scope of footage available (truly spanning Bergman's entire life) and how personal it felt. Definitely picking this up during the next sale!

I disagree. This is a great documentary which can stand on its own as a film and it's obvious that a lot of work went into it. It's not just movie clips and talking heads, there is a tremendous amount of archive footage. What makes the film extraodenary, apart from the subject herself, who was very different from your average Hollywood diva, is that Bergman documented and kept everything.
