One of the things that bother me year after year, is that people ***** and moan every day about OT issue. And they have a chance to voice their anger and opinion at all these celebrations and cons. And when nothing is announced they sit on their hands and say nothing. And if a rerererelease of the SEs they go nuts and cheer like idiots.

If you have a chance to go to a celebration, boo Disney out of the room if they say there is no news on the OT, and really boo them if they announce a 4K SE.

Problem is it's just Force.net Lucas apologists who go to those conventions.

Back when Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, I remember reading various fan-theories that Lucas put some sort of clause in the contracts where they could only release the special editions and not the originals. I thought that was the craziest sounding mess, but now I am starting to wonder if such a thing might actually be true.

I doubt it. I honestly don't think George cares anymore. Towards the end it became more 'I don't wanna spend the money to restore it' as opposed to 'It doesn't exist to me anymore/doesn't match my vision,etc.'. Now it's not his money. Also this would prove true is there's any truth to when John Landis leaked a year or two ago that Disney is restoring the originals.

I think that's a myth. We just have to look forward to 2020. If it doesn't happen around then, it's probably never happening.

I wouldn't put it past him, but I think Disney would've mentioned it by now.

I'm guessing one of the surprises for the 40th may be a screening of never-before-seen footage from STAR WARS? Perhaps the LOST CUT for attendees?

I'm probably way off, but that would be incredible.

Sounds like their idea of a surprise is a new box to put the same special editions in.

But the issue with waiting until 2020 is that the physical media market will have dwindled even beyond what it is now. Will they even make a profit on releasing the unaltered trilogy in 2020? Not many people even know about the SE changes or care.

The Original Trilogy, as it was, on BD (or UHD BD), will never occur.

Lucas went to a huge effort to restore the holy trilogy in 1997 and during that restoration he made the changes that he always wanted.
To him, the Special Editions are the definitive versions (even though since then he was done tweak after tweak, until we have the BD version).

And yes, I am sure, because Lucas wished he had the ability to do so much more with the original trilogy (but technology held him back), and he simply sees the 1997 version as the Star Wars he always wanted, Lucas would have put a clause in to the Disney contract that the Special Editions are the only versions that can get a BD, Digital, UHD BD release.

You're right. The technology to have Greedo shoot first just didn't exist in 1977.

No, that's just what the CGI-obsessed hack said to justify his vandalism. Funny how some people actually believe that crap.

If they're worried about a lack of interest, all they need to do is make it another limited edition or have it only be available for 6 or 12 months, and just watch how many people run out to buy this thing. I also don't think it's gonna be as popular with the general public as it would be to people here, but there's still a market for it and I can't imagine Disney/LFL would lose money by releasing it.

But after 2020, it's probably not happening. The more they delay it, the more newer Star Wars movies get released and people lose interest in "those old ones." The SEs will have been available in some form or another longer than the unaltered versions, and at best there'll be some small documentary on a future re-release that highlights the changes between the original version and the current one.

Makes me sad. Might pop in one of those LE DVDs tonight. Kinda feel like watching Empire.
