My copy of Southern Comfort, which was a day one purchase, does not have a slipcover. These Shout Factory releases tend not to have slipcovers, while the Scream Factory Collector's Editions do have slipcovers.

Scream Factory is a sub-label under the Shout Factory label, and this thread is the best place to check for Scream Factory titles. The genre designations are not always an exact science, so there are a few movies that strike me more as Shout Factory material (The Island, Assault on Precinct 13), although they were released by Scream Factory. On the flipside, there are a few Shout Factory releases that I consider to be horror titles (Race with the Devil), but were not released under the Scream Factory sub-label. I also happen to think of Southern Comfort as a horror film, for reasons discussed in my User Review for the movie that I posted earlier in this thread, but it's probably better off listed as a Shout Factory action thriller sort of film. To further the confusion, Blu-ray.com lists "Shout Factory" as the studio label on the top heading of the official site review pages for each movie. To further the confusion even more, Scream Factory releases Collector's Edition Blu-rays that come with slipcovers, but they also release several standard editions that do not have slipcovers. The best way to tell, of course, is to check the spine of the movie for the "Scream Factory" logo. Last edited by The Great Owl; 08-28-2014 at 01:56 PM. |

I don't think I have any Shout titles with a slip (including this one). I know The Walking Tall Trilogy had one at one point.
And to follow up on Owl's post, a few of the Scream titles have "Shout" on the spine. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think it was the Incredible Melting Man and Q |

Anybody else watch the behind-the-scenes documentary on this? Peter Coyote discusses the violence and mentions that he's seen people shot and seems to imply that he had been shot. I tried looking it up to see if maybe he had a service record but instead all I could tell was that during the Vietnam era, he was a zen Buddhist hippie, so I'm not sure when and where he would have been shot if that's what he's claiming. Later on he also talks about the "Nazi" German lady dog handler on the film and said how he had threatened to kill her effing dogs if they got near him, hardly something a zen Buddhist would say. In summary, this guy seems like a bit of a BS-spewing dick.

So I finally got this and had a quick look at the opening. Is it me, or is it a bit DNR'd? Seemed a little waxy and maybe slightly smeary at times in motion? Hoping that once I watch it properly, the overall presentation will seem a bit better. I was just expecting a little more after looking at the screenshots and specifically choosing the US version over the UK one.

Having recently revisited Hard Times via Eureka's magnificent Blu-ray release and with Shout's Streets of Fire and Trespass upgrades on the way, I decided to revisit this action/horror gem with a few beers.
Still Walter Hill's (my favorite director) masterpiece, IMO, and the Blu-ray looks terrific. It just doesn't get any better than late 70s/early 80s Hill. |

It comes in stock for a short while and then it ends up back to being only sold by third part sellers. Perhaps Amazon only keeps a low stock of this item for some reason. *edit* It is in stock again: https://www.amazon.com/Southern-Comf...=ATVPDKIKX0DER |

IMO, the Second Sight UK Blu is a smeary DNR'd mess with brightened revisionist color timing. The SF Blu (while having some compression issues) sports a more film like transfer with some debris here and there.

The pixalation is most likely down to compression issues on SF's part (remember that some of their earlier transfers had this problem) but I can kind of live with it as longs as its not riddled with combing artifacts, ghosting, or halfed frame rates on top if it.

I noticed some compression artifacts here and there, but it's still the best presentation available. The documentary on the disc is really good as well.

Have you seen both for yourself? I'd say that the Second Sight is most definitely an older transfer with that kind of orangey-tinted colour timing but it's nothing like a "smeary DNR'd mess" and I like the 1.85 framing. The Shout's colour is better but yeah, the compression isn't great and I don't like the crop to 1.78. It's only slight but to my eyes it makes a difference in some shots.

When I saw the SS disc, i noticed it was overly brightened and very smeary. But then looking at how different the screen grabs look on the site just now then the time I saw it, I then went back to the disc and decided it may have been my TV doing too much processing when I was watching it that time.
The SF actually shows a bit more vertically than the 1.85, while losing a bit on the sides ironically. |
