Sticking with my target steel as well. Curious to see what art they will use for this though

Did they ever remaster the US release to fix the crushed blacks?

As far as I'm aware, no. But the German release is Region Free and does have the correct black levels. Here are the screenshot comparisons.

This is the release in question:

I bought the German disc and put it inside my Target exclusive steelbook.

Is it actually confirmed that those are the "correct" black levels? I mean I see a difference in contrast but not exactly the loss of detail that "black crush" suggests. Hard to know which one was intended by the filmmakers.

I don't know about the filmmakers' intentions, but Sony confirmed this is a "corrected" disc. They just never bothered to "correct" the US copy containing black crush.

And to my eyes, there are several places where detail is lost due to black crush. Especially here.

If that was the intended look, it would have been shown theatrically like that too, and it wasn't. They screwed up the BD. It was one of several released by Sony at the time that was screwed up. I believe The Interview is another with crushed blacks.

Same, the target steel is fantastic, not sure how that can top it. Wish it was a 4K release...
