Xfinity X1 Service / Platform

This is the only thread I could find on the subject, so if there is a more recent one please point me there.

Comcast/Xfinity has been upgrading to a new "platform" (X1) for a while now and they finally got to my area a few months ago. First thing I noticed was former 1080i channels are now 720p, and this is by design so they can fit more channels in the same space. That sounds like an upgrade for them, not the customer.
Channels that were formerly in 1080 rez that are now 720 include TCM HD, MGM HD and even premium channels like HBO!
The new X1 boxes allow 1080p vs the old 1080i boxes, which is the real kicker here. I've noticed a softer, less detailed picture as a result. What is Comcast playing at with this?

They made that switch awhile ago. I remember hearing about it (Detroit is a BIG comcast area) and they were trying to "sell" it as a way to save a some bandwith and still get similar resolution.

One of the many reasons Comcast is terrible. I'll never go back to them.

The only thing I envy is that Comcast offers an HD version of TCM, which is not available on Fios for some reason. Hopefully one day soon.

Pretty ballsy move by Comcast/Universal, which must be absolutely rolling in dough, to downgrade the service, not mention it, and offer no reduced rate for the downgrade.
I'm in a similar situation as The_Donster with the fast internet package included, and being over-ruled by the household on cutting the cable cord ... for now.

Yeah, I got rid of the boxes when I saw how bad the compression was on our 55" LG and our son was like 2? He's 8 now and had hoped that streaming or BD's would all he'd know at this point. Unfortunately every time it is time to renew something on our my wife ups another piece of equipment
