Um, 'cause they had to fit within the 30GB confines of another format?
The same format that claims it has enough space for anything?
Agreed. It's amazing how the HD DVD crowd avoids achknowledging these compromises.

Just a quick comment:
I was able to talk to Robert Meyer Burnett and he let me know that the "Requiem For Krypton" doc, while shot in HD, was not edited or mastered in HD due to budget constraints. Warner also had a bunch of IME stuff planned (and shot). Just as well I guess, it wouldn't have fit on a HD DVD (and they compromised the video of the feature as it was).

He was also happy to hear about the new lossless (PCM & TrueHD) version coming later this year.

interesting. Would it need to be re-edited by the original creative team to get it into HD (for BD)?

Got my copy in the mail yesterday. Can't wait to re-watch this again. Actually, I got my new copy of Stargate and Fifth Element on the same day.

Got my remastered copy on Wednesday and finally had a chance to watch it today. It's beautiful!

As a side-point, I also REALLY enjoyed the Fact Track bonus feature, which popped up little trivia bits during the film. It was fun and engaging and a good example of the type of bonus feature that every BD should have.

I also received my remastered copy this week and finally watched it on Friday. It truly does look better than the other disc. Some darker shots look a little grainy but the overall sharpness and color are vastly improved.

It has to be re-captured in HD and edited in HD to be mastered in HD from the sound of it.

If it was all done in HD and then downconverted because of capacity constraints of HD-DVD, that's another thing. The way Peter explained it, sounds like the production didn't have the money for a HD editing job.

From what I gathered all their Superman Returns behind the scenes footage was downconverted to SD and edited & mastered (sound & titles & whatnot) that way with existing equipment. I guess HD workstations aren't common and a lot more expensive (at least in mid to late 2006).

Can you say "double dip" when the sequel comes out?
BTW: Apparently Braniac & Metallo are the villains of the sequel, along with Lex Luthor. Singer's got a kick ass storyline and is starting it as soon as Valkyrie is finished. Apparently he's given up on Logan's Run remake (even though the IMDB still lists it).
