Alex Garland had a Q&A on Reddit. For the answers related to the movie:

1. He stated that the film is contained and not open-ended like the books.
2. Working with Natalie Portman was impressive and she was great.
3. Expect some psychedelia!
4. He discussed about the Netflix situation.

I read the first book a few days ago and have no idea the main character was an Asian. And from Garland’s AMA on Reddit, he said he only read the first book as well so...

I’m genuinely interested in the movie. Never read the books but I think it looks cool.

I think accusations of whitewashing is ridiculous overall.

1. Movies generally have auditions
2. Studios are likely to pick popular actors
3. Are there really a bunch of great actors of “said” race that could be in “said” movie?

Do people really think filmmakers look at adaptations and purposely pick white actors to replace non-white characters with? Seriously? Like picture it...”we’re adapting this book, great let’s start. First who can we replace with a white person?”

Well thats disappointing.

Another oppertunity for representing a minority as the main lead is missed.

To the above stupid post, does that mean "Jeep didn't intentionally mean to kill Anton Yelchin so its OK for the design flaw to exist"...

Aaaaaaaa +1 I know, right!

And the filmmakers KNOW that someone might complain, yet, they still cast a white person. Why? Because they cast who's best for the job! Sorry, there's simply alllllot more white actors to choose from. It's simply a numbers game.

Watched this last night in Toronto at a special screening with Alex Garland in attendance to do a Q&A afterward. Unfortunately I had to catch a train home so couldn't stay for the full Q&A.

I thought the movie was pretty good. Liked it, didn't love it. Has some really cool things going for it. Knew nothing about the movie other than the poster going in so no idea what I was in for.
Some awesome gore scenes and cool SFX. I really liked the premise and the "world" he created in the film. Some parts were very cliched and I had to roll my eyes a couple times.

Overall, this will look great in 4K. The digital projection looked spectacular. Let's hope it comes to the format as I think it's worth a re-watch.

Ok, so looks aside (cuz at the end of the day, how it'll look at home in 4K isn't as important as the story), what would you rate it? What's it most similar to?

Umm, I don't want to spoil anything, because I don't know what the trailer is giving away about the movie. Even Alex said at the beginning when he introduced the flick; "the less you know before watching the film, the better".

But it has some strong sci-fi horror elements I'd say feels like a new Alien movie, if there were no Xenomorphs in it lol

I gave it 3.5/5 on Letterboxd but both my friends that were with me gave it a solid 4/5.

Alex also said in an interview to watch it on acid. Unfortunately I did not have any with me
