Hong Kong Office (2015) Blu-ray 3D [Region A Locked]

Hong Kong auteur Johnnie To has released his first 3D film, Office / Hua li shang ban zu, a workplace musical. It will be distributed by Edko Films on Blu-ray 3D in Hong Kong later this year. It is a 3D conversion by TWR Entertainment.

I haven't found concrete evidence, besides reviews claiming "shot in 3D," but Office appears to be a native (converted) 3D production. According to IMDB, it was captured at 2.8K with Arri Alexas. Everyone, so far, has praised the visual and technical aspects of the film, including its use of 3D, and reviews have been generally positive.

I'm excited to see this one but am also hoping he has a native 3D action-gangster picture up his sleeve for the future.

Hopefully more 3D coming from To:

Q. You revealed during your panel discussion that you’re working on a musical drama, something new for you. Is there any other genre you would like to experiment with?

A. I think a martial arts film, a wuxia, would be good. I haven’t touched that genre for years, and the last film I made like that was The Bare-Footed Kid, almost 20 years ago. I shot many TV series like wuxia, with the swordplay and such. But the thing I really want to experiment with is 3D. The technology has improved so much—it’s really promising for Chinese, and world, cinema.

Just a heads up for anyone who was interested in this movie--the 3D is native but (converted and) incredibly flat. It looks like they shot the movie far away from the subject with a minimal, fixed interaxial. No attempts were made to use the 3D for story-telling or spectacle. I was majorly disappointed and expected much more from Johnnie To and Milkyway Image. For anyone unfamiliar with To's movies, I highly recommend forgoing Office for a 2D double feature of Election and Election 2 instead.

Thank you BleedOrange for the heads up. Sorry to hear the 3D looks flat. That's disappointing as the potential here for strong 3D was great considering the railing, and layers of office workers and so on the movie includes. Sad to see he's so eager to explore 3D stereo in movies but afraid to make it exciting beyond a flat, nearly 2D image from your description.

When on the set, it's critical that he approve the first shot (and really, every 3D shot) only if it's appropriately strong 3D for that shot, so the rest of the 3D camera crew knows how to proceed.

I'd say the 3D presentation is similar to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (although the movie is much different and not nearly as entertaining). Maybe Johnnie To can hire Keith Collea or get some advice from Tsui Hark next time he experiments with 3D.

Dawn of the Apes level 3D, okay thanks. That puts things in perspective as far as the 3D being mild. Hopefully he'll learn more about what makes 3D exciting from the experts in the field or just by watching more strong 3D films.

"Office 3D" (One Week Engagement: March 25-31)
Hugely popular Hong Kong auteur Johnnie To, primarily known for his action movies, surprised and delighted his fans this past year with the remarkable "Office," a stylish, buoyant musical shot in 3D featuring grand, eye-popping set design reminiscent of Jacques Tati’s classic "Playtime." Adapted from her own stage play by Sylvia Chang, who also costars, "Office" takes place in an austere yet exquisitely realized high-rise, where two new assistants attempt to climb the corporate ladder and please the head honcho (played by the imperious Chang).
Cool theater! I love Johnnie To's filmmaking and his references to the French New Wave and other classics. Sparrow was light and fun with plenty of French influence, and Throw Down, his tribute to Kurosawa, is one of my favorite movies in recent memory.

Office is actually the only To movie (out of 11 I've seen) that I did not enjoy, even a little. It busted this illusion for me that he was incapable of making a bad fillm. The set design was certainly remarkable, but unfortunately, that wasn't enough to make it entertaining. There were too many characters for the brisk script to delve into, and the only good music was in the first trailer that I linked. I hope others enjoy it though and that Johnnie To is encouraged to make more movies with (better) 3D.

Oddly enough, his next action crime movie is titled Three, and all of his fans are awaiting Election 3. Those seem like perfect 3D tagline setups to me.

Thanks. If the 3D was strong, that would have made it more watchable in the case of the movie disappointing.

Yeah, i was let down with the 3d in this film, it was nonexistent, i was taking off the 3d glasses and there wasn't any 3d.

I noticed last night that this blu ray 3d edition by Edko Films Ltd. is now out of print.

Wasn't this one a converted 3D film? I remember it was a pretty bland conversion.

Yeah, it's incredibly flat. I said it was native earlier, but it's mostly likely a cheap conversion. I don't think there were many errors, so it fooled me, but there wasn't much dimension either. Regardless, it's not worth the glasses.

Aw man, I was just thinking of picking this one up, and then I stumble across this thread of less-than-stellar reviews of both the 3D and the film itself. A 3D Chow Yun-fat musical by Johnnie To sounds like it can’t miss on paper.
