On an OLED, yes. But on LCD or plasma... the black bars are obvious.

look for the aspect ratio of the release-- if it says 1:85 aspect ratio you
won't see black bars, if it says 2:35 aspect ratio you will have bars.

I'm happy either way-- I want the full (not to be confused with full screen)
picture but some movies are shot wider than others. A lot of great films are shot 2:35 so beware-- Star Wars series, Indiana Jones, most of the James
Bond films, etc etc

i've been watching dvd's for so long, i don't even notice them anymore. it's become a way of life when watching movies. i didn't even notice the apect ratio change in The Dark Knight.
