I thought Zemeckis was a 5.1 guy? Surprised he allowed an Atmos remix. Even Allied was 5.1.

I think some movie studios release inferior products on purpose. Look at T2 they’ve had years to get that right and have continually released below par discs.
Again some Studios think that if the new release is better that will do, but that’s not good enough. How the **** can you have a 4k transfer be so hit and miss, one minute it looks incredible the next shite! It’s all bollocks to make more money. It makes me wonder that in years to come will we be double dipping on our fav 4k films again just before 8k comes out because they release a “better" version!

I watched his new trailer and totally forgot he made that.
I was thinking of what he did of late, and thought The Walk was a long was back.

More than likely he had nothing to do with this remix. In his case (like Nolan) this is probably a good thing as he's not much of a surround lover.

Gump was an LD demo disc...
Contact and Flight also sound amazing.

If you consider Gump was basically a 3.1 mix, the Atmos mix is a welcome thing.

The Atmos track is useless on this anyway. Aside from a few scenes I don’t really see the point. I love Atmos when done right but not every movie needs it or should have it. I was also very distracted by the wax on my screen anyway.

I never welcome an audio remix.

I agree. Having a Dolby Atmos set up in my Home Theater, Atmos surround sound on 4K-movies is always a big plus for me.

I did but it made things worse. Next time I’ll dab instead of rubbing

You didn't see Cast Away or Contact did you?

Zemeckis' audio tastes have evolved.

Don't blame you, his recent stuff has been good-not-great. Except maybe Flight, but that's a one-time watch.

Received my Gump disc today, skipped though it and unfortunately don't like what I see.

Even when it looks good, it looks bad to my eyes. Looks as if someone tried to make it look like a digitally shot film to me.

I also took two caps of a scene that imo had rather offensive DNR and looked really waxy to me throughout:

As you can see, the BD actually isn't really any better, but that's not an excuse for the UHD looking like crap imo.

I also spotted some awful looking "standing grain or whatever you want to call it" which imo is the result of the applied filtering in two scenes so far. The first one was the 'Forrest having an "accident" when being initimate with Jenny' scene, the other one is in the example below (the BD frame doesn't match at all because it doesn't matter).

The UHD really has some terrible "compression/artefacts/whatsoever" here while the BD at least still looks like somewhat consistent grain to me. The cap unfortunately doesn't manage to show how bad it looks in motion. And I really don't think it looks like it does, because that's natural grain.

Utterly disappointing relase imo. Even when it looks good, it doesn't look like film to me resp. looks very processed to my eyes. And I find it worse in motion than I thought it'd be based on caps' caps.

I think it still looks better than the BD, but it still sucks. Just my 2 cents.

I think the biggest complaint I read is the inconsistency.

The 4K UHD definitely looks much more detailed than the BD at certain points.

But, since at other points the 4K UHD has no more detail, it can be jarring to go from those high detail to low detail scenes - where the BD is more like medium detail to low detail, so it sticks out less.

Seems to boil down to whether you want a more consistent presentation (BD) or one that gets the most detail out of each scene but is inconsistent from scene to scene (4K UHD).

I will probably stick with the BD for this one.

That’s interesting because some scenes looked excellent on my display but the other 80% was a waxy mess

Yes, it does - no doubt about that. But it still looks processed then.

At any rate, I'd recommend buying it only cheap. I got mine from wowhd for 20,68 €, but I still slightly regret having paid even that "much".
