The argument that studios don't want to pay Dolby, is truly overblown, IMO.

People really seem to forget just how great of a relationship Dolby has with all the major studios in the filmmaking industry. For goodness sake, they're trying to push the envelope of technological innovation, to assist filmmakers, game developers, and visual storytellers in general, in telling the best and most immersive stories possible.

To me, the whole Dolby Cinema experience, and what they've accomplished with their screen size, black levels, contrast ratios, and HDR--as well as the integration of Dolby Atmos--they've made it feel like you're looking through a three-dimensional window, while being surrounded by the film's sound design, without having to resort to controversial mediums like '3D', 4DX, or VR.

I don't see why anyone would really want to push for another company to challenge what Dolby is doing--other than them potentially resting on their laurels, which I don't foresee happening. With how quickly they've challenged IMAX and other large format options, it really is impressive to see all the ground they've gained in a three or four short years.

I can only imagine how they'll continue to develop these technologies over the next five to ten years. Here's hoping they continue to play an essential role for developing and pioneering the success of UHD blu-ray, as well as the theater going experience.

Companies embracing HDR10+ are doing so for the benefit of not having to pay royalties to Dolby...
Yeah, they are totally embracing hdr10+ because of dolbys licensing fees.. cause 10+ is totally free and open source!

Oh, wait, samsung requires an annual fee, and worse, requires you to share trade secrets with them as well. So not only do you still pay for using it, you get to give your main competitor information that helps them crush you in the process.. there is a reason sony said eff off to joining them..

Still not quite sure what Warners mean when they talk about their existing catalogue in that way - “With HDR10+ dynamic metadata, WB can continue to more accurately bring the filmmakers’ vision of our 2018 releases and our vast catalog of over seventy-five 4K HDR titles to the home across a broad range of HDR10+ capable TV’s” - seeing as that whole article is specifically about getting the HDR10+ 'ecosystem' ready for deployment on disc. They did that in a previous bit of spiel for HDR10+ but they've gotta mean streaming (which can be changed as if swapping out a tyre) as they wouldn't be about to re-release their entire 4K disc catalogue, surely?

I think they are referring to backward playback capability so no one thinks those 75 titles all of a sudden won’t play on one of these TVs

Yes. (You knew BUT was the next word.)
But Shirley they must be referring to streaming as Geoff concluded, as it is soooo unlikely they would re-release 75 titles on disc just for 10+ metadata.

My read is it's not about paying Dolby is a negative thing. It's about per-disc royalty at all being unsatisfactory to some companies with HDR when they have a better option in their mind. Clearly. The writing is on the wall with that one

Moving on... Love the semantics argument laid at me about pricing. Come on now. Per year is a subscription basis, not royalty based in the same way DV is, per disc authoring. Regardless, that both cost $$$ isn't the point being made. The differential would be substantial in favour of HDR10+ implementation.

So, first Samsung will say it's "Fake News", and then later they'll say "or was it?"

Few news outlets reporting that hdr10+ has finally finalized the format and is doing some demo in vegas shortly, with uhd titles coming "later this year. Kinda funny pr statements since they had in past stated 10+ was already complete and ready to use on disc, and in use on amazon.

Reminds me of the press releases over DTS:X (vs. Atmos). This is the video version, except a LOT less playback options.

Los Angeles, CA – June 20, 2018 – HDR10+ Technologies, LLC today announced the start of the new
licensing and logo certification program for HDR10+ technology. HDR10+ is the royalty-free, open standard
dynamic metadata platform for High Dynamic Range (HDR), which optimizes picture quality for 4K Ultra HD
displays and improves the viewing experience for all audiences.

The new HDR10+ technology optimizes picture quality for 4K Ultra HD displays by using dynamic tone
mapping to reflect frame to frame or scene to scene variations in brightness, color saturation, and contrast.
The resulting enhanced viewing experience can now be easily provided on a wide range of displays bringing
the viewing experience much closer to the original creative intent for the content.

The HDR10+ license and logo certification is available to interested companies that meet HDR10+ technical
and testing specifications. The HDR10+ certification program qualifies the compliance based on different
device categories and their technical performance to ensure that HDR10+ compliant products meet high
standards for picture quality.

Consumers will be able to look for the HDR10+ logo which signifies a product’s certification. The royalty-free
adoption of HDR10+ for content production, distribution and consumption has already gained momentum
with over 40 supporting companies.
“The new HDR10+ licensing and certification program represents a technological step forward for next
generation displays,” said Danny Kaye, Executive Vice President of 20th Century Fox and Managing Director
of the Fox Innovation Lab. “HDR10+ improves the viewing experience for all audiences by delivering higher
picture quality to a wider range of affordable TVs and devices.”
“We believe that this licensing and certification program will provide reassurance to consumers who want to
ensure that they are seeing the most accurate HDR representation of the creator’s vision,” said Toshiharu
Tsutsui, Director of Panasonic’s TV Business Division.
“With an increase in demand for larger displays and premium picture quality, we are thrilled to announce a
new HDR10+ licensing and certification program,” said Bill Mandel, Vice President of Industry Relations at
Samsung Research America. “This program was designed with consumers in mind, highlighting our
commitment to improving the overall HDR experience while simultaneously extending the HDR10+
ecosystem globally.”

The HDR10+ platform was also designed to allow for future development and innovation in order to deliver a
more powerful technology in the years to come.
Companies can learn more about the HDR10+ license and logo program by registering at
