My local theatres just did this with the Extended Editions and I have to say, I'm pretty sure they just projected the Bluray because it looked like shit projected onto an Ultrascreen.

I hope they use the DCP's for these.

ew, the AFI Silver did that once for a screening of 'Pink Floyd: The Wall' but they projected the DVD - calling it shitty looking was deserved.

if you find out, post back, I'm curious myself. I would think and hope First Line/Warner's would by now have put these on DCP. I think they would have since the Wolf Trap National Symphony Orchestra presentations 'looked' like DCP and where certainly not 35mm.

oh did Regal switch over to 'laser' projection for RPX? I know that Cinemark's XD screen features Barco laser projection.

I'm not entirely sure. Regal introduced RPX when AMC was advertising ETX. Don't know if Regal's made any changes since. Haven't been to an RPX showing in awhile.

was just curious, since nowadays Regal seems notoriously cheap when it comes to upgrading any of their theaters to modern amenities (I personally think ALL their RPX screens should at least be Dolby Atmos).

I'm not sure, and it may also vary by theater (for instance the RPX near me has Atmos, but I believe some use DTS X instead), though I do know 4K projection is a requirement for those screens.

I rather like the RPX near me which also has a over 60 foot wide screen and reclining seats, and nice picture quality however they do it (was there most recently with Insidious 4 and Paddington 2- really fun Atmos mix on the latter).

I am shocked that they are charging 5 bucks for a movie on their RPX screen. Non-premium screen fine, good deal, but RPX 5 bucks.... seriously man, they will attract quite a bit of people if they bring back movies from 5 to 10 years ago at a cheaper rate.

I love Lord of the Rings, but those marathons run late into the evening. There’s no way I’ll hear that score and stay awake. Not sure I won’t fall asleep even if it started in the morning.

Agreed. It’s my favorite trilogy ever and arguably the best three movie set ever but there is no way I could watch them back to back to back. We usually break them up into six parts. When it says "continued on disc 2” is when we stop. Sometimes we’ll do a full single film in one night but never multiple films in a row.

Yikes!

I don't think there will be a single showing with leather recliners where someone doesn't fall asleep during each movie.

That's a great idea. I wish the Hobbit movies had built-in "intermission" points like the extended LOTR movies.
