While there is a market for used discs, most titles don't command a very enticing price making selling them hardly worth the bother. You can often get a better price from just selling the slipcover alone on this very website; slipcover fans are a ravenous bunch. Lower shipping costs, too. I give unwanted or duplicate titles to family or friends. If they don't want them, I donate them to either the public library or to hospitals. If all of that fails, I make sparkly mobiles out of them and hang them from the ceiling in a bright sunlit room- next best thing to a disco mirror ball. ![]() Last edited by Vilya; 11-15-2018 at 05:32 PM. |

But if you don't care about having new shiny packaging, you can get discs from Ebay for very cheap. Though this market is probably pretty small. |

Some used disc buyers prefer to buy from pawn or consignment shops where you can inspect the disc before buying it. You can also determine if it is a genuine disc or a burned copy. The last consignment shop I visited told me that used movies, even VHS tapes, sold very well, but they still sold for very little and as we all know anecdotal stories are the best evidence of overall market health. ![]() The other problem with ebay, and buying discs from there in general, is that there are a LOT of bootlegs being sold there. Invariably when I read on these forums someone complaining about a bootleg, they bought it on ebay. Last edited by Vilya; 11-15-2018 at 06:06 PM. |

No, I would say that’s very uncommon as it kind of defeats the object of being a collector. I would even say it is stupid.

I am not afraid to buy from ebay, but I try to avoid it when it comes to buying discs. I trust buying from third party sellers on sites such as Amazon more, but they often charge more, too, creating a dilemma. Still, some people don't like buying used discs sight unseen from online sellers. If you have pawn shops and the like near you, and most of us do, it is safer to buy used discs that you can actually examine beforehand. The only time I shop for a used disc online is when I am seeking an OOP title; these can command hefty prices, whether they are new or used. I try to avoid being in such a disadvantageous position by closely monitoring this website, but despite my vigilance a title will slip thru my fingers now and again necessitating that I pay a ransom to get said title. V Stretch what do you do when playing a DV disc since it locks out the 203 video adjustment. I'm still using the zoom method for 2.39 but still considering a A lens and sled. The Panamorph calculator says I will need to move my projector back almost 2 feet. ![]() |

Let me explain in simple terms. As a disc collector, why not just buy a brand new, safe purchase with a online retailer like Amazon or HMV rather than risk getting a dud? I don’t know how simpler I can make my post. Or why buy second hand at all? Discs are not that expensive in the first place.

And people definitely do turn titles around quickly. Used outlets always have a decent supply of recently released discs. Quote:
As for being stupid, I always thought buying toys and not playing with them was kind of goofy but what the hell do I really care if somebody wants to spend their own money on a toy they're not even going to take out of the package? I love buying used. It's a cheap way to pick up lower-priority titles and it can be a great way to pick up TV series. GoHastings used to be freaking awesome. If you happened to be online when one of their coupons dropped you could snag some really cool stuff for next to nothing. |

I've bought many used titles on or at Family Video, GoHastings, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, etc. I've bought some steelbooks on eBay and picked up some OOP discs, all fine. You can't fake THOUSANDS of positive feedback. Trust your vendors or who cares, PayPal or eBay will refund you anyway.

I always look at the used movies when I am in a store that sells them. I might find a bargain or a rarity. I keep my options open.
I just don't typically browse used titles online because there it doesn't even occur to me unless I am looking for something that is OOP. In fairness, I have never received a bootleg from ebay; I check the seller reviews pretty closely. Ironically, the only bootleg I ever got came from a third party seller on Amazon.com for a Korean TV show. I shoulda seen that coming, but one bootleg out of all of my purchases is still a pretty good track record. Again, I do not worry about the resale value of discs as I do not sell mine. I buy things I plan to keep. Even so, whenever someone reminds me of how little a used disc is worth, I point out that it is still infinitely more than what a used digital code is worth. No option to resell those, is there? If I did want to defray the cost of my purchases some, I could sell the slipcovers my discs come with. They are not important to me, but some people adore them. They, too, have a value unlike a used digital code or the packaging that they come in (when bought from a store). My 7,324 discs, just the dvds and blus combined, have a resale value, however small it may be. My 96 digitally redeemed titles are completely worthless; I'll never see a dime from them. Thankfully, I am a collector, not an investor, so there is no need to worry in either case. Last edited by Vilya; 11-15-2018 at 10:38 PM. |
