Not if you set it to the Super High setting. If I put it on Medium or Low then it claws back way more highlight detail on a >4000 nit monster like The Meg than my 'regular' settings would do. But for something that's been mastered to hit 1000 or 1500 nits peak then yes, the Optimiser makes zero difference as I toggle it on or off.

Just hooked up my new 820 and have fuddled around with the HDR Optimiser - however no matter what disc I spin (tried some darker films like Arrival, Watchmen, Solo, Dark Knight Rises etc.), I don't see any difference between HDR Optimiser on or off when toggling back and forth. Some of the videos out there show a lot of difference when toggling but I jsut don't see any on my system.
I have a B6 and set the tv-setting on the 820 to "OLED". Now as I understand it the Optimiser should be working when set to "On" even though I don't pull the sliders for tone mapping etc. correct? So what am I doing wrong? Have I missed at setting that turns the Optimiser on? Thanks for your help guys! |

Hi there
Is the advanced statues info playback screen only on the ub9000? I have a ub420 and don't have that option available? |

There is, I think you have to hold down the button for three seconds. Only hacked UB420s get the advanced info screen (I think they get Dolby Vision too).

Gah. My attempts at running separate HDR calibration readings on all four modes (Basic/Medium/Super High/OLED) have been thwarted because the metadata on the Masciola greyscale test patterns tops out at 1000 nits, so while the Basic mode results in some big differences in the luminance from about 50% upwards the other three deliver damned near identical results to a standalone HDR10 calibration from my OPPO, using the same patterns at the same TV settings. Basically the HDR Optimiser is looking at the 1000 nit metadata of these patterns and going "Pshaw, I don't need to remap this!" in the Medium, Super High and OLED optimised modes.
I was wrong about the OLED mode being the same as the Basic setting because it's performing the same as the Medium and Super High settings in this instance, so wherever the point is that the OLED mode starts to map it can't be too far south of 1000 nits. Damn....looks like Stacey's 600/1000/2000/4000/10000 patterns on Spears & Munsil: The Next Generation can't come soon enough for hobbyists like myself who don't have two grand to spare for a pattern generator like a Murideo. It's only by using patterns that have been mastered with higher metadata (>1000) that the Optimisation's upper three modes will show any effect in objective readings at my end. |

As long as other people are on top of it then you don't have to be. You're being very gracious about it anyway, unlike some people. Seems like every few weeks someone pipes up and puts in a concerted effort to needle the "nit pickers", God knows why, but it only ever has one effect on me: I just wants to write downs MOAR JARGONS

Ryan's disc has single metadata for whole disc. Stacey's will be different PER PATTERN. I made sure to tell Stacey I wanted this first thing. I also showed him what Panasonic is doing with their internal test disc which allows you to change the metadata on the fly. So you should have better results when Stacey's disc comes out. |
