Andreas stating the obvious as well. I know that many of those are VFX (Gump came out when I was still keeping up with this stuff) and I'm also really not pointing any fingers at people being fine with it. But it doesn't stay just on the right side of the DNR divide for me - it doesn't at all. Call me crazy, but I might watch the BD over the UHD, because it doesn't annoy me that much.

I'm actually also less of a pixel peeper than some might think. Mostly, I'm just interested in a picture that looks good and natural in general to my eyes. And Gump doesn't qualify. The pixel peeping is actually only there to pick the best option. I think I'm also way more tolerant towards technical limitations than I am towards ****ups. And Gump is the latter in my book, because it could've and should've looked MUCH better than this. Hunf.

It hasn’t even been a year since it was released. No way it’s a different transfer. Also, Paramount often reissues the same discs in anniversary packaging.

As usual, I'll disagree with everyone and their dog and it still looked good enough there for me. IMO (!) it got ugly only after that - let's say 40 mins or so into the movie.

I have yet to purchase the release from last year and have held off due to the poor reviews. Crazy how some may have to double dip already and likely for the same transfer.

What exactly about this would make you have to double dip? I'm confused...

I really like that new slipcover but if they haven't fixed the atrociousness of the original 4K release then no, thanks.

New cover is weird to me. I'll keep this one. I doubt they will be doing a new transfer anytime soon. They might try to sell an 8K Gump or something. But reasons for DNR I am not sure. Maybe they were trying to blend the CGI better and the algorithm broke.

Maybe a 30th anniversary.

For me it's really the most frustrating Paramount UHD release in existence (Grease doesn't count because I don't care about that movie that much.) And I'm slightly annoyed when people tell "me" that I am just being 'scientific' and would enjoy it, it if I wasn't.

The annoying thing with Gump is that many caps don't show how fugly it looks to my eyes in motion. (I know that there's a certain irony hidden in there!) I could post plenty to point out that it looks bad and some people won't see it resp. it'll just look like a pristine digitally shot movie (#5 might be such an example). caps-a-holic doesn't do it justice either IMO (it looks too good there).

But some caps from throughout the movie do show the DNR rather good IMO. Thing is, I'd be completely fine if it looked as it does on #1 and early on throughout (fake grain/whatsoever or not). But compare #1 with the last one and you should understand where my Gump frustration is coming from (and no, that's not "intentional"). It's also not only a FX shots issue. #6 even looks like what StudioCanal used to do with some BDs.

So, no, I can't enjoy Gump. Paramount ****ed it up. I think I might've enjoyed Gump looking like that 10 years ago, but not today.
I find the complaints here a little overblown. 9 looks to be pretty bad, but I think that is an effects shot no? Ten doesn't look great but also not as bad as 9.

People screaming like this is on the level of Predator are overdoing it. It's literally not even close. The extra resolution helps a lot. I have this but have not watched it as I don't have 4K yet. Do these look worse in 4K on the bad ones?

Have we not confirmed some of these are effects issues? No doubt those effects shots are going to cause massive issues at 4K resolution.

Agree. Yes, there is some moderate DNR in few shots but this IS a massive upgrade over the BD. If you are purist then yeah it can be frustrating but thankfully it is not a work of wax.

Pfff.

DVD quality for 4 random scenes, and 4K quality for the rest. Yeah that seems like a fair trade for all of my hard earned money. Hey while we're at it why don't we just have 3/4 of are 4K panels do 4K and the 1/4 do dnr/dvd levels of quality.

Because you don't seem to care, no one else obviously should either.

Because there are so many things in life to worry about and some mild DNR isn't going to bother me a bit. Life is not perfect you know lol

"DVD quality" is the part where you sorta lose credibility there in that argument, though. There is no frame in this UHD that is close to appearing as low res as DVD quality for me. Despite you being disappointed by it and wanting more for the disc; objective reality is still a thing.

I've watched Forrest Gump enough times to have memorized the script. I've defeated the biggest Gump trivia buffs doubling as servers at the Bubba Gump restaurants. Even made one buss boy shout F-bombs storming back into the kitchen after I precisely gave the amount of time Forrest spent running cold. (3 years, 2 months, 14 days, 16 hours) That was funny. Every time I watch it, I see something new, for example the irony of Lt. Dan being the only one without a seat at Forrest's wedding.

Just watched the 4K for the first time. It's easily the best I've ever seen Gump. I have no idea what any of you are complaining about.
