Default I need some help please about my receiver.

Okay here's the story.

I finally got a receiver, a Harman Kardon AVR 254 from Frys for $449. So I get home and of course start to set it up. I hook up my speakers. (All I have are a center(KLH), 2 surrounds used as fronts(Bose) and a sub(don't know the brand) ) Okay of course I didnt go and calibrate and configure the speakers because I felt that it would be a waste of time since all my speakers are different. All speakers do work I get sound and dialogue from the center and great sound from the "fronts" but my question is why does it take a couple seconds for the sound to kick in.

For ex. I put in Warhawk. The title screen comes up but the title music takes 1 or 2 seconds to be heard. It's like its trying to catch up. Another thing is on the PS3 XMB, you know the chime sound when you move about, well that cant always be heard. Yes I have it checked to be heard.

Is this caused by the receiver or be other source. All connections are by HDMI. PS3 (HDMI) to receiver (HDMI) to TV.

Please help, I am on the verge of taking it back to get a Onkyo

Try using a different HDMI port on the back if the receiver.

Nope, same thing. I find it weird because when I had my PS3 connected to the TV it was perfect.

I would calibrate your system even know you have different speakers. This will EQ them and set the volume, distance correctly.

due to the fact that your receiver can except audio from multiple inputs
you have to allow your receiver a second or two to activate the
choosen audio setting(dvd, satellite, cd...etc)

that makes sense. so because its (sound) going from PS3 to receiver then to TV its going to take a extra second? do all receivers do this or is there some extra feature that might help this not happen.

The receiver will take a split second to start decoding the audio and lip sync it to the video. So you missed part of the dts intro, enjoy the movie.

Not sure if this will help or not, but make sure your PS3 is set to Linear and NOT Bitstream. Let the PS3 decode the sound tracks, not your receiver.

As well when playing Blu Ray's, I have increased the level from the PS3 by +1.

Not familar with the HK's but I wouldn't think it's normal to have any type of "lag" at all.

one thing i noticed when i got my onkyo 705 is that it took a few seconds for it to change from 1 codec to another when going from 1 typ eof soucre to another. Likke if 1 channel on my tv was doing stereo and then i switched to a channel that did 5.1 sound, the onkyo would click and it would take a second or 2 for it to switch to the new sound mode and hear sound.
I also noticed that with DVd/blus when you go from a menu or preview to the movie as it goes from 1 soudn format to another.

Most of this was fixed when i went in a mapped all the lower sounds types like mon, stereo..etc,,,to be played at a particular sound mode. that way the system doesn't have to switch gears to play a different sound format.

Harman Kardon's have always had a small delay before locking onto the signal. Mine always did.

So did my O.S. Sony and the Denon does to. I really have never given it a second thought as there's a lot going on in the processors inside that thing. Lots of 1's and 0's being manipulated.

I haven't had any "lag" from my Onkyo 905's, 706 or Pioneer VSX-1018. I'm not fromilure with the HK's either though...
