I believe i'm in the same situation as the OP, i bought the Onkyo 605 and later realized i wanted to add an amplifier to my setup. Currently i'm looking at the Yamaha 663 myself. Seems to be a great receiver for the money, and has Pre-Outs. Might be your best option for that price range.

So the 605 doesn't have pre-outs?

My old receiver has them so I think I will get an amp first, if not happy I'll for a new recever aafter that. But I want to give my old AVR its day in court before it gets sentenced to life in a box, stuffed in a closet.

crazyBLUE,
Please elaborate.

I feel my AVR can do what I want it to. So, I can save, a grand at least, by not buying a separte amp and a seperate receiver at this time. I can spend some nice cash on a nice amp and later down the road pick up the other piece. Also, it is easier to sneak Audio equipment by my wife one piece at a time. I know

OK Travis !
I went back some & you're receiver has Pre-outs right ! I would get the nice amp because you can upgrade the receiver down the road ! Because you're receiver is older , After you get the amp the only thing I would watch for would be If the receiver is getting to hot , IT may or may not ! My amps are cooler than my receiver & they have been on since 10:00 am . But my stuff is newer !!

It's okay, she is blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.

Going to hell for that one.

disclaimer: Maggie if you read this, it is just a joke. Sorry, not funny.

Travis, the 605 unfortunately does not have pre outs. Reading through your thread, i believe you could make the Marantz receiver you own work with an amplifier however. What are you looking at running, 5.1...7.1?? Also, what kind of Blu Ray player are you running? PS3 will decode lossless audio for you so you wont need a receiver that decodes the new formats if you have a PS3. If you could list your entire setup, that'd be a big help.

As far as amplifiers are concerned, I keep hearing very positive things about Emotiva, their XPA-7 is the one i'm going to look into buying. About $500-600 there.
