Pretty much this lol Blade II is okay... definitely my least favorite Guillermo del Toro film, but still alright. Trinity is just awful.

I kind of like Blade II, but I didn't really like the story, especially David Goyer's script. I don't think I've ever seen a movie with so many bad cliche lines that were played completely straight: "Is the enemy of my enemy my friend?" "Who do you think God favors in the web, the spider or the fly?" "Keep your friends close, and your enemies... CLOSER" (wow, so insightful, Blade! lol)

I was shocked nobody said "revenge is a dish best served cold" at some point.

Same here. I remember going through all of them to this day. Incl. that dodgy ending with the La Magra Blood hurricane... And that would have been just about 20 years ago. Good grief, that was so long ago.

That was one of the first DVDs I ever bought and I still have it, even now it's still one of the better packages of special features I've seen for a (then) new film. That disc came out in 1998, it's older than some of the people posting on this board!

I have the UK EiV disc from 1999. My oldest discs are a quartet of Warner Bros. titles from 11th May, 1998. Tin Cup, Batman & Robin, Outbreak and Disclosure.

Ugh, just one of many EiV (spit!) DVDs that mangled what New Line did with the R1 disc.

I've never seen this. I've only seen the second one. I'm a major '90s kick with my movies (Batman Forever, Apollo 13, Batman & Robin) and my music lately (Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories, Abra Moore) so this will be a nice addition. Now if we can only get some other great 90's films on 4K such as:

The X-Flies: Fight the Future
Speed 2: Cruise Control
Fled
Fair Game
Straight Talk
Beverly Hills Cop III
Species
Sister Act
While You Were Sleeping
Another Steakout
Dragonheart
Twister
Eddie
The Phantom
Under Seige 2
The Rocketeer

Ha ha ha. I only wish. I'm old enough to remember my first Betamax purchase. He--, by 1998 I had already lived a quarter of a century. You just made me feel REAL old.

THANKS.

At any rate after hearing about how culturally groundbreaking Black Panther was for comic book movies, I kept wondering why Blade was never mentioned. So many of the praises I heard applied 100% to Blade, 20 years earlier... And frankly I'd prefer a small time super hero than the questionable leader of an even more questionably closed society hoarding amazing technical advancements and wealth...
I do see what you are saying, but Black Panther was one of the first movies made by a prodominantly all black cast and crew. Not to mention the fact that it made over a billion at the box office, with $700 million of that coming from the United States. Blade, on the other hand, made only around $131 million dollars off a $45 million budget. With $70 million of that coming from the United States. Not exactly a barn burner at the box office. Not that it wasn't somewhat successful. You just have to understand the times.

This movie was coming off the heels of one of the worst comic book movie years in history back in 1997. That year saw big, big flops for Batman & Robin, Steel, and Spawn. although Spawn did slightly better than the other two and may have turned somewhat of profit. It all depends though if you have to follow the same general rule that you follow today. If so, very few movies back then were not succesful. Again, it depends. However, Black Panther was an unparralled success.

I also felt at the time, one of the reasons why Blade was so successful was the general public did not realize this was a 'comic film'. Way easier to cross over into the mainstream when you had people going to check it out because of vampires, action, and Wesley Snipes. Perfect gateway, and it worked because it was a well done film.
Blade was not the savior of Marvel. Nor was it the savior of comic book movies. That distinction would probably go to Spider-Man, if not X-Men. Blade just wasn't that big of a movie with the general public and it was not really known as a comic book character. He's a relatively unknown comic book character. In terms of greater visibility with the general public and getting more people aware, even interested, in comic books or comic book movies I would say that Spider-Man did that job wonderfully.

I remember being at work Monday after opening weekend for Spider-Man and people were talking about it. And not your nerdy, comic book fans. These were your average working folk who probably haven't read a comic since they were kids, if even then. Blade certainly didn't do too bad for itself, but I don't think it saved anything. It had too much of an uphill battle to fight to do that. Coming off 1997, comic book movies were not looking so good. And the Blade movies never did much to change that. They all did well for themselves, with the exception of the last one, but they were never big sellers.

That was legit a fun time at the movies. It wasn't anything groundbreaking or Oscar worthy, but I was thoroughly entertained. And that's all I ask for. I haven't seen it in 23 years though.
