Ah I see, did some more dorky tests and can clarify a bit further.
When the audio is set to the English dub, and the subtitles are disabled (including the lyrics), the signs/text are still automatically translated. When the lyrics are turned on then both are translated at the same time - ![]() ![]() The translations for the on screen signs/text are not automatically triggered when watching it in Japanese with the subtitles disabled. In short the separate lyrics sub track does not have an effect on the signs translation rather it is tied to the audio language being selected. |

When viewing the movie with Japanese audio, in the associated subtitle track none of the individual subtitles are flagged as forced, that's why turning the track off disables all of them. |

If I may go into more detail with how I previously checked it, I did not press play right away but chose chapter select. After reading your post I thought maybe pressing play straight away might be causing the glitch.
Checked it again just now, pressed play from the get go this time and... got the same results as last time. The translations for the signs and text are still popping up automatically on my end. Wish I could tell you for sure what's going on, perhaps it is a production batch issue but I really dunno. |

I have the variant edition ordered (I think that's the correct - the one they made available later, which was much less limited but with most of the same stuff). Looks like they've stopped taking orders for the variant now, and removed the release date from the page: https://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/weathe.../12661230.html I've got to say I think the lack of communication from Zavvi about this has been pretty poor. I haven't received a single email from them since my pre-order back in August. Do you have any info about why the delays are, out of interest? Last edited by wakka; 12-07-2020 at 11:10 AM. |

I notice they have now put a new release date on the Zavvi page for the variant - 21st December. It's also available to order again:

As resolution is not significantly different on the release, the main draw for viewers would be the HDR application and the use of color depth on the disc. Unfortunately, the HDR on the 4K disc is somewhat modest and never showstopping. The colors don't seem significantly better or deeper than the standard Blu-ray. The HDR application seems minimalistic in approach and is often quite subtle: the light from gaps in the clouds and subtle flourishes in the falling rain have minor improvements. Yet the HDR is never that impressive on the whole. Making matters more complicated is the fact that the 4K UHD disc seems to have unnecessary digital sharpening. The additional sharpening may have been a production decision in Japan so that the 4K presentation would appear to have more detail than the standard Blu-ray edition. Unfortunately, the application of additional sharpening actually detracts from the overall picture-quality and makes it somewhat unnatural looking. The presentation looks overly harsh at times and less pleasing on the eyes than the standard Blu-ray disc. On the whole, despite some modest improvements in some areas (such as the HDR grade), the 4K disc seems like a disappointment." Well, that's disappointing to hear. I love the film and was looking forward to seeing what improvements the increased resolution and HDR added. If it looks worse and the HDR adds little if anything, what's the point other than the extras? Last edited by AreaFive; 12-15-2020 at 01:42 PM. |

Dude has legit no idea what he's talking about lol. Much of the movie is purposely made to look overcast but once the actual weathering starts the colors are as saturated as a VS release. I even popped in the BD to compare and it doesn't even come close, the HDR makes the image look so much more vibrant and tactile, even in the first three minutes (I was seriously wowed the first time I watched it). It's a fantastic upgrade and it's well worth the money if you like the film.
Also, 5 stars for the movie, really? That's more than their rating for Akira. |

Plus, the f**kton of artificial sharpening was done by the Japanese staff who handled the UHD, so it's baked into the 4K master. You're honestly better off watching the 1080p BD over the UHD. BUT, it doesn't make the collector's edition pointless- as the 100 page book, soundtrack CD, and bonus Making Of documentary make it a must own for fans... not the UHD itself. |

So wowsers, not sure what to do. I blind bought this for the 4k after acquiring the 4k Your Name. There are some very different reviews/feedback on here about the 4k version of WWY. I dont have a ton of interest to hold onto this for the features or book if the 4k is subpar. At this price point do you feel it is worth it based on the 4k disc??

I thought the HDR was very good, and it did seem to benefit from 4K detail in the rain/snow scenes. It was the best HDR I've seen in an animated movie, and also particularly good for the rain and snow scenes (there's a lot of water in this movie). As for whether it's worth $80? Only if you're a big fan of the movie. The book is very well done and the CD is good but I can't recommend the entire package at that price. I don't care about money so I got it but I know most here do. Maybe rent the BD or stream it and get the UHD if you really love it.
I know it's not part of the review, but the page the review is on under Playback says the 4K disc is region free. Is there a way to change this? Under the region coding tab there is also (for any UHD) there is also the note "Please note that all 4K Blu-ray are region free, only submit region coding for 2K Blu-ray." which is uh, not true haha. |

https://highdefdiscnews.com/2020/11/...lu-ray-review/ 1080p review and caps you can compare with https://highdefdiscnews.com/2020/11/...lu-ray-review/ |

You can't change the 4K region coding, they're operating under the previous knowledge that they were all region free. It only lets you submit info for the normal BD.
