Basict Instincts 4K and we are still running around saying the sky is falling? As pointed out these last few years are extreme outliers. The supposed trend is being based on short sighted big box stores that blow with the wind.

The coming years will be interesting and I predict that we are clearly heading for a boom which will not hurt physical medua one bit.
I never said it was a big concern. It doesn't bother me at all as the majority of discs I purchased in the last few years are titles I import or older titles that wouldn't be in stores regardless.

In the Laserdisc days I had to drive 45 minutes away to the only store in my area that carried them. Now anything can be found online with the press of a button. It is not surprising nor alarming that local stores are scaling back physical media. I was merely stating that local deals are becoming harder to find as physical media footprints shrink in brick and mortar stores.

Even in those days my LaserDisc purchase was mostly mail order from the LaserEdge then from Digital Eyes. Digital Eyes became DVD Planet that is now Deep Discount. Around 2005/6 singed up for Amazon Prime and that is where a large % of disc are have been purchased.

Have several BD westerns in my basket at Screen Archives.

Tested the Donnie Darko disc. As other have reported it looks like a choppy mess in my Panasonic UB820 but plays fine in my Sony UBP-X800. Geoff D seems to think it is an issue with the processor in the Panny models and consoles. Now I just have to wait for a replacement program .

Speaking of cinema releases, I've already put my AMC-List membership to work.

Scott Pilgrim in Dolby Cinema is tomorrow night, then next week is Wrath of Man in DC, and Spiral in IMAX on the 14th.

I definitely want to buy Donnie Darko on 4K disc, but I am glad that I waited in this instance. Even though the frame rate problem with the theatrical cut does not appear to happen when played on an Oppo 203, I prefer to wait until Arrow corrects this issue.

I have three Disney 4K titles arriving today (Guardians Of The Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Toy Story 3) and three more tomorrow (Thor trilogy). That will conclude my purchases for April.

Although I really enjoyed Donnie Darko, I’m happy with my Arrow edition with both versions on it. For some reason I don’t feel compelled to upgrade with this one.

I was lucky enough to have a laserdisc rental shop when I first got into LD in the fall of 1996. I had my first job, bought my first LD player, and bought my first LD at Tower Records. That LD was Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days" and it was great. Dolby Digital 5.1 had just come out as "AC-3." It was great.

For a few years I was able to rent LaserDisc from Video Concepts store in the mall. It was a 45 mile round trip, had to be a member of their rental club ($50 in 1985).

Modified my Pioneer CLD-900 LaserDisc player to output RF and procured a Sony SDP EP9ES decoder to play disc with DD 5.1 sound. Exciting times. Wish I could remember my first LD title with 5.1 sound.

Pioneer CLD-900 - I was disappointed to see that Pioneer engineered the laser focusing system for 55min/side extended play LDs (for a few years, CD format digital audio on LDs limited the playing time to 55min/side).

I had the optical system replaced under warranty, no improvement, severe crosstalk on all LDs over 55min/side (CLV and CAA), I finally bought a Pioneer PR-8210 for the >55min/side LDs.

That is a great movie. I still have that Laserdisc. I actually still have all my laserdiscs and my player but haven't used them in over 15 years.

I sold off my LDs years ago. I have the German BD import of Strange Days, though.

I transferred the signicant ones. Still the best version of many movies. Virginia Shauna Grant's crown jewel blows away the DVD for me.

I did the same; making DVD back-ups of the important ones. I still have 179 laserdiscs which is way down from a peak of having owned about 1200.

I got rid of so many I now regret selling. Even some of the revisionist blurays make me crave the old days. Something about the way they looked bring me back. Still remember the first day I seen the Big Boss in widescreen going...wth have I been missing!!

Me too though I had less that 10 LDs and in my case I just donated them. VHS was abolished from my life in the 1900's. I owned very few VHS as that was mostly something I rented.

I still have a MPEG copy of a single LD I owned. I didn't bother with backing up any of the VHS stuff.

I don't know if we have talked about this because it came up when the site was down but it seems relevant.

"Apple contends that 'no reasonable consumer would believe' that purchased content would remain on the iTunes platform indefinitely. But in common usage, the term 'buy' means to acquire possession over something

So buy virtual assets reasonably.

Apple itunes content lawsuit

Buy physical while you can, enjoy the complementary online copy while it lasts. Easy.

Yeah, I shared an article about it several pages back (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...ostcount=31504). Not shocking for most of us.
