I received my copy yesterday from Import CDs and I watched it last night. I am only a small collector and I am NOT an expert on PQ.
As you would expect for a BD, there is a big improvement in sharpness and detail as compared to the ancient DVD I have. The bad news is there is a lot of speckling. A lot. Obviously, it is most visible during the darker scenes. Unfortunately, it is most distracting during the Vic Tayback scene, which is a pivotal scene in the film.
As a small collector I am always happy to upgrade a DVD and The Gambler is one of my favorite performances by James Caan. For me, in his peak leading man era (post The Godfather through, let's say, Misery in 1990) his two best roles were in this and, of course, Thief.
