Any Netflix streaming players with WiFi?

Hello all!

New to the forums. Check this site about twice a day great resource. I am currently using a PS3 for my Blu ray player primarilly for it's WiFi, price, and 120 hz capability. I'm very excited about the idea of netflix being able to streamed but am looking for a player that utilizes WiFi. I thought they may update the software to use this but with the Xbox signing a deal with netflix I'm skeptical of this happening. Are there any or any news of any netflix capable boxes coming with WiFi?

I have a Roku box that is wireless, but I don't believe any of the blu-ray players with Netflix streaming built in are wireless at this time.

I have the PS3 and the LG BD300 Blu Ray player with Netflix streaming. The PS3 will stream Netflix via some software called Play On (google it). However, it has only worked once for about 15 seconds for me - and never again.

The LG BD300 works flawlessly for Netflix, but it's not wireless. That said, it DOES work wirelessly with a simple powerline adapter, and those are fairly cheap now.

My issue with the BD300 is the price. $325 on Amazon is fairly close to the price I paid for my PS3 ($339) and Netflix streaming isn't all that great aside from catching an old movie here and there.

Also, for whatever reason, the BD300 streams pretty much everything in 4:3. Some things even play in 4:3 with black bars at the top and bottom - it's not a great experience and that's even with the highest quality internet connection. If it determines the quality to be a 2 (out of possible 4) it gets even worse.

I don't know if they will be supporting Netflix but I will definitely be purchasing the new Sony BDP-S560 which WILL have the newest in a line of features WI-FI. Download and play direct from wifi product and I suspect would allow too be able to play netflix on desktop/laptop and wifi to player. I've been trying to decide which BDP I would pair with my new Sony Bravio 32" and after reading the reviews for this player, this is the one too choose.

Technically you can buy a wifi adapter for the xbox 360

I use my 360 for Netflix, but I have a WRT54G that I converted to an AP using DDWRT. All my devices are hooked up via ethernet but they go to the AP thus no wires outside my entertainment area

That's your opinion! I actually think Netflx's online feature is pretty cool, and it's only going to get better. I've got it playing through my HTPC, though, so maybe my experience is different from yours.

It'd be interesting to see if the new BDP-S560 will be able to do Netflix. I have a feeling that many future players that are Profile 2.0 compliant will be able to. Even if they don't come that way out of the box, they could be updated over the network. I'm still kind of crossing my fingers that my BDP-S550 will be able to be updated to do Netflix.

I'm excited about the Sony BDP-S560 having built in Wi-Fi! I have a Roku box and like others have stated I'd like to see this new sony Blu-ray player have the ability to receive Netflix movies. But I am skeptical or they would already have announced it. Still... I need a new blu player for the downstairs so the 560 may come home with me in July.

The new Samsung BD-P1600 (~$300), 3600 (~$400)and 4600 (~$500) have WiFi and stream Netflix.

With the 1600 you have to buy an extra WiFi dongle ($80). And according to CNET the WiFi is pretty hard to set up on all of them.

May have to check into one of these. Read the reviews but they didn't explain why the WiFi was difficult. It just had a footnote that the WiFi adapter they received with the player was defective and had to be replaced then it worked fine.

If you have a xbox 360 you can get the wireless adapter and a wireless router and use netflix?

Just a guess i dont have a 360.

I wonder how the WiFi compares to the PS3 wireless setup. While the PS3 is easy at first, it (and the router) requires attention on a regular basis. Why can't anyone figure out an easy way to go wireless?

Hardwiring my ethernet is my solution to problems with wireless set-up.

jriga, this is informative to me...and it makes me a heck of a lot happier that I never went with a Netflix-compatible player. I was always curious about some of the things you mentioned. I'm kind of shocked about the 4:3 thing; I'd have thought for sure that with a box that's designed to work with Netflix, it'd be able to recognize the proper aspect ratio. I get proper aspect ratio via HTPC, but I do not get the ability to watch in HD. It sounds like neither of us have the best of both worlds.

I'm of the same belief. Nothing in my house that relies on large amount of data transfer goes through my wireless. For some, though, that's just not an option -- whether that's feasibility-wise or just the fact that they want everything to be wireless.

I get HD streams all the time with my ethernet connection.
(1080i/720p upscaled to 1080p by the player)

Oh, that's cool. So it sounds like your Samsung Netflix-compatible player is a good one then. Maybe the LG model is buggy or something. I really wish they'd allow Netflix HD via HTPC.

One thing to remember is that when you are selecting "Watch Instantly" titles on netflix you have to click on "HD" in the drop-down menu under the "Watch Instantly" tab. Only those movies in that list are HD. Finding titles by any other search will not tell you if it is HD or not which as actually pretty lame on netflix's part. I think that they do it that way to keep the quantity of people streaming HD limitted.

EDIT:

Click "Watch Instantly"
Click "Genre"
Click "HD"

Then you get a random list that is not sortable by any other means. NETFLIX NEEDS TO FIX THIS LAME SEARCH METHOD!!!!

As far as I can tell the dongle is a model-specific device that must be purchased from Samsung.

Why was it so difficult to set up WiFi? They didn't go into detail, but if it's anything like setting up my PS3/wireless router I can understand their frustration.
