This for me is an exciting day. I was very happy for hours after reading this news.

https://www.startrek.com/news/direct...fully-restored

To me, this is the proper version of the movie. I have no used for the Theatrical cut frankly, I wont even watch it. I love this movie, and the music as well. The Kilngon theme is just fantastic. The sound use in this movie is among my all time favorite. I still have the DVD and have been waiting for this to be done for years. I rarely ever get excited about releases, but this has made my year.

Discuss.

There's nothing about a 4K disc though. This is an older article from a couple of weeks ago. And this edition will be exclusive to Paramount Plus for who knows how long.

This could be beneficial to a later 4K UHD release though. Usually when major restoration projects like that this are undertaken, some slip ups occur. TNG had to replace four discs of it's first season launch due to incorrect sound mixing and missing visual effects. Some errors on later season sets were corrected for streaming (Planets not spinning at all) but sadly never fixed for Blu-ray.

The Wrath of Khan Director's Cut had a disc replacement program because of a repeated shot of Sulu.

There are SO MANY details regarding the Director's Edition that would be easily missed. Having it released on a platform for people to pick at BEFORE a 4K UHD is released would be vital to ensuring that we get the proper version of the film on that disc.

Yeah, so this should probably go in the Wish List section since there's no release forthcoming.

Still, it's nice to have a thread dedicated to the 'Director's Edition' in 4K since it will not be a part of the 4-Movie set coming out this September.

I just realized something after I talked about the 'Special Longer Version' in the 4-movie set.

...what if some of the footage used for the Director's Edition can't be presented in native 4K? TNG lost some footage and had to up convert it from SD. Could the footage from the SLV be lost as well?

>.<

Ooo, I hope not.

If you want to hear about the restoration, Daren Dochterman who's working on the restoration talked about it a bit on Inglorious Treksperts a couple of weeks ago. Of course, he couldn't say much but I'm pretty sure we're getting a 4K disc because that's a lot of work wasted if it stays streaming due to bandwidth.

Assets for the Trek films were always kept separate from the Paramount/UPN series and were likely fully catalogued during the Robert Wise restoration project, which also led to the remastering of the soundtrack, with unreleased music assets. The SLV might be an actual film-print that was put together, though it's hard to say without actual archival knowledge of the assets and only someone like MM, who was behind the remastering of TMP, would likely have that knowledge.

The SLV being a film print has some credence, as there have been stories that a different cut of the film screened on airlines. I think Stephen Collins mentions in the book RETURN TO TOMORROW hearing from a stranger on the street that a different cut with the 'we all create god in our own image' line was playing at a 2nd run house in NY.

I don't want to get into the thing about film elements again, because MM has stormed in a couple times in the last decade or two saying that they had all the assets for the DVD work, whereas I still think the stories I heard had credence, that Trumbull and Dykstra eventually tossed their original elements a couple years into the 80s when Paramount refused to claim them.

That almost nothing from TMP has been repurposed -- except for some part of the vger transcendence that got used in TIN MAN and the simple copies of TMP footage in TWOK, which look severely degraded like dupes, not like recomposites -- seems crazy, given the wealth and quality of material.

Shoot, Shatner could have just skip-printed the vger cloud and pulled a color layer out of it and had a fine center-of-the-galaxy for TFF for no money if the elements were still around, and Ralph Winter would certainly have known that and been lobbying for reasonable cost-cutting, especially given how the money got wasted in large part being thrown at Ferren when their post schedule was massively truncated by the mandated release date.

No, in his case over 2 AUs in diameter. I'm very happy with the 82 AUs in the theatrical version (or at least happier than I am with the reworking. There's still a ton wrong with each version.)

I wonder if most folks know the size/length/distance of an AU in real world scientific terms.

I knew AUs and parsecs before I was out of jr high, but that was strictly due to reading a steady flow of NASA FACTS and science fiction, not from school. And I never have gotten a really good explanation about why they were thought up or used at all, given that light years is more readily understandable and relatable than parsecs, and it seems very egocentric to make the distance from earth to sun a measure of anything. I knew L.A. was 393 miles south of where I lived growing up, but would hardly try to use that as a basis for figuring out how much further south Mexico was located.

Apparently our solar system is 39.5 AU. So V'Ger being 2 AU makes more sense.

82 AU is waaaaay too big.

Either size, travellng at warp 7, it would have hit Epsilon 9 and been gone before anybody got two words out. (not an original thought -- even the Apogee VFX supervisor was quoted saying the same thing in 1980.)

Also, keep in mind that one of the prime (re)writing forces on the movie was Gene Roddenberry, who once said VGER is bigger than the universe. Uhhh-whaahhh? (source for that was either Syd Mead or Jon Povill, but I can't remember which.)

In celebration of the Director's Edition announcement, I took it upon myself to recreate the Director's Edition opening titles. Purchased the 'Galaxy BT' font, learned Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, VLC Player and finally putting the finishing touches in Final Cut Pro.

Phew! It sure was fun. I love this film's title so much.

Obviously it's not a 100% recreation. I did make some deliberate artistic choices in how the title was presented. For instance, the way 'Star Trek' is shaped caused some inconsistencies with the text's weight. For example, look at the top portion of the 'S' and compare how thick that is to the 'T' immediately next to it. I found out that it was just a case of increasing both the S and the K's scale, which causes their weight to be different. I chose not to alter this change completely since it does make the titles a bit bolder, so I elected to alter the top portions of the 'S' and 'K' and have the weight get larger the lower the letter goes. Consistency on the top, bold at the bottom.
