No,it wasn't. Granted,the film is dark but I saw it in its first theatrical run and you could see tons of detail,even in darkness,that are absent in all home video releases (VHS,LaserDiscs,DVDs and Lionsgate's awful BD).Even the colours are distorted (greenish fire?). What was released theatrically was ten times better than the murky mess we paid for in its home video incarnations.
A new BD release was now announced by Paramount for October, I hope they have the wisdom of going back to the OCN and do a better job of remastering this to be able to enjoy it as it was meant to look.

I wasn't referring to detail. I've noticed that many of Peter Hyams' films have this hazy look to it. Look at movies like Sudden Death, Stay Tuned and The Presidio. They have that look to it.
I'm keeping my eye out on the upcoming BD release and see how Paramount handles the mastering.
