I've been apprehensive about Sony anything the past few years but this player hasn't been so bad. Only hangup I've had was the third layer switch with TENET which apparently a lot of people had. Anyways, I have the Hisense U6G being delivered on Wednesday and I'll finally have a Dolby Vision capable set. I know one of the things with this player is Dolby Vision is either on or off and when HDR 10 is played, the TV still reads it as "Dolby Vision" when it's not. Does this affect the picture in any way? Do I need to go back and forth switching the feature off depending on discs?

Its annoying because all the cases have no mention of Dolby Vision in some countries. Its not always easy to know if the disc has DV.

True. I've noticed it labeled on a few but it's definitely inconsistent. A few weeks ago I watched The Dark Tower in HDR10 because it's from Sony and they usually don't do Dolby Vision only to find out later that that particular disc had Dolby Vision.

I bought the nordic release of Tomb Raider (2018) and the case doesn't have DV logo. US release seems to have it.

Mine has been solid but I've had a few snafus, for some reason one particular scene on the LOTR Two towers won't play, tried 2 diff sets, gonna try the Sony 800 model I think but it's been playing all the discs fine lately *knock knock* |

Was trying to watch Bumblebee last night but had trouble getting the menu to display on my TV so I unplugged the HDMI cable from my receiver and plugged it in again. That seemed to fix it but when I put in the Bumblebee UHD disc I got a blue screen with text in several different languages saying that the disc was optimized for playback on an HDR display or something. I checked the resolution of the content and it was 1080p or something.
I then went into the player settings and tried to force the output to be 4K, which worked for the menu but didn't change the output of the disc. When I set it back to auto detect resolution the disc played at 480p. Lol! On a whim I decided to change the HDMI cable and lo and behold that did the trick. Funny thing is I watched Cloverfield a few days ago without any problems and the HDMI cable that I changed to had previously given me problems. Funny how finicky these things can be. |

It's not available for download on the Sony site so no info there. Last one available for browser download is the M43.R.0277 version from March 2019.

More than two years since the last update? Quite a long time. It didn't say what was updated after I installed it, just that the update was successful.

It's listed on the Sony Asia & Europe/UK websites across all 4K UHD models, it claims to improve UHD Bluray disc compatibility, amazing that Sony remembered or actually care to update the players, hopefully it doesn't break anything

I think it's safe to say the X700, X800M2, X1100ES will always have manual DV. I doubt Sony cares enough to ever change it. Still surprised by this firmware update even if it isn't the firmware update most or all users were hoping for.

Put it on and inserted a Blu-ray and the TV registered it as a Dolby Vision disc, so that still ain't right. |

Hopefully it at least does what it claims and improves stability. Not that I've had many issues, the only time I've had a total freeze-up was on Man of Steel (right at the beginning of the scene where he goes to surrender to the military) so maybe I'll give that a rewatch soon and see what happens.
