Ordered the Zavvi edition, more for the book than anything else - hopefully it's worth it..

What was the theatrical mix for this film, and is it included in this release?

Hmmm that is sad, do not understand why it’s so hard just to include original theatrical mix.

Because the people working on these releases don't think like collectors and only want to do the least amount of work possible, usually.

Well, they'll take the time to slather the opticals in DNR and get some goon to upmix the audio into whatever the audio format du jour is, but putting something on there that fans actually want is beyond their reckoning.

That’s what I mean, seems like more work to do some new mix vs just including the OG mix. Just doesn’t make sense.

I dunno if you're a Predator fan but for some reason I imagined you saying that last line like Sonny Landham does in that movie.

Know why? Because they have marketing people who say "just up-mix it even if we don't have the stems (like, omg, wtf even is a stem) because it looks good for us if we can put another bullet point on the press release. And that fuzzy stuff? Get rid of that as well. It looks OLD."

Lordy, I knew someone would get triggered by that. Yes, you’re still a fan if you don’t give a stuff about OG audio and want all your speakers filled. Should’ve said “some fans”.

‘Twas ever thus. Can’t have things looking and sounding old with that dreadful old hand drawn ‘art’ on the cover. People want it shiny, they want it loud, they’d rather have a version that fills their screen and they love a bit of crappy photoshop with some floating heads on the cover.

Just because you have a bunch of speakers doesn't mean you want them filled. I watch tons of mono movies and I have a 9.1.6...it just means I'm prepared for ATMOS content as well. Plus, like it or not, this board is a minority compared to joe public who actually want something more than the original mix and want something updated if they're going to double and triple dip on releases.

Sure but how hard is it to do that AND include the OG audio. Seems like a total no brainer.

I never said I didn't want the OG audio, but the narrative around here is always that people "want to fill their speakers" which is BS in a lot of cases.

Many production companies seem to tie 4K UHD to Atmos (and 4K & HDR). So 4K UHD is considered the premium format both when it comes to video and audio.

I.e. buy:
BD: Get 1080p, SDR, DTS-HD MA.
4K BD: Get 2160p, HDR, Atmos.

This is regardless if the original audio for the movie had Atmos in the first place or not. So for newer movies with Atmos as original audio, BD may be a downgrade. And for older movies without Atmos as original audio, the Atmos track may be a gamble, i.e. can be better or worse than original audio.

You're one of very, very few people with all the gear who actually does this though, even on this board. So many speaker fillers and screen fillers it's fookin unreal, but then the "purists" have always and will always be in an ever-shrinking minority. Again, even on this board.
